New Shamrock Parody

It seems that Ken Shamrock can never catch a break no matter where he turns. Be it in the cage or on the internet (mostly the latter) he always seems to be the butt of internet jokes and they do not appear to be slowing down anytime soon, especially with the release of the latest parody video that seems to be taking the MMA internet scene by storm. Here it is in all its infamy, the “Ken Shamrock Meth Video”, made by a crew calling themselves “TCM”.

Check the video after the jump…

Kimbo vs. Tank Weigh-in Picture

Tonight is the battle of the street fighters. This fight has the making of a very exciting standup matchup (my guess for about a minute) . Take a look at the attached picture. This is a picture I found on www.mmajunkie.com. It seems like a picture that would be posted in a magazine asking for captions. I would love to post this on a betting website. I can only imagine the influx of gamblers that would bet on Kimbo - people that aren’t fans of MMA. This is hilarious. In my opinion this picture tells the entire story behind tonight’s fight.

Kimbo looks like a big muscle bound ogre that you would avoid on a dark night as you leave the bar. He is definitely a man among men, but in my opinion he will never be considered among the elite of Mixed Martial Arts. The sport has evolved and the best are no longer one sided fighters. They are good athletes that can compete in all areas of the game. They can stand and bang, or take you down and submit you. A testament of this is Josh Koscheck. He is the most decorated wrestler in the UFC, and his dominant wrestling skills aren’t enough to beat the likes of GSP (that actually out wrestled Koscheck in their fight.) Like I said in a previous article, this fight is more of a side show at the circus.

Caption This: JLau at UFC 81 After Party

This picture was taken at Frank Mir’s UFC 81 after party at the Rum Jungle in Mandalay Bay. Let’s see what captions you guys can come up with! I don’t have prizes for this caption contest, but I can certainly try to come up with something for future editions if we can make this a success! The full sized pic of Joe Lauzon and his crew is here.

You can also see after fight pics of Mir, Nogueira, and rich girls with ripped Affliction shirts on this gallery. What else could a MMA fan want? The link to all of the pictures is here. Check ‘em out. Props to MMA Mania!

Dojo Busting Gone Bad (Video)

TheBass from MMA.tv’s underground forum proves that MMA fighters have the upper hand against wannabe thugs these days.

The gym I train at is currently relocating and is still under construction so we’re not open to the public but we already have mats down so the fighters can still grapple and train a little in the meantime. Myself and 6 other guys had just finished rolling and were sitting around discussing technique when a guy and his gf walk in, both holding Budweisers, and ask for me and my coach by name. I reply that I’m the guy they’re looking for and the guy says he’s there to kick my ass. I brush it off at first as I’m told he’s a friend of a friend but he keeps saying he wants to fight. I remind him he’s drunk and tell him to come back when we’re open and take classes but he insists he’s there to kick my ass. After much more nagging and the fact that he called me out by name I agree and go get 2 pair of 4 oz gloves with the intent of just roughing him up a little. The guy has 5 or 10 lbs on me and looks to be in pretty good shape so I’m thinking he might be a dojo buster from another school in the area so i warm back up a little as he’s yelling and saying he’s ready. he didn’t have a mouthpiece so I didn’t wear mine and we began. So I’ve got my hands up and waiting to see what he’s gonna do and he rushes at me flailing and I hit him with a right mid kick that makes him grunt and back away circling as he continues to rush. Once again, he has no mouthpiecs so I don’t want to knock his teeth out so I duck under and body lock him and take him down and mount him quickly. Once there, I let him quit flailing and posture up and ask him if he’s ok, to which he replies hell yea. I then proceed to lump his forehead up, careful to not knock his freakin teeth out until he rolls over giving me his back. The RNC takes all of 15 seconds to gently secure and put him completely to sleep.

Afterwards I immediately rolled him on his side, slapped him on his back until he woke up, sat him up and gave him some water. I felt like a real piece of shit for about 5 min but I was really nice to him thru the whole thing. Then, get this, all knotted up and complaining about his ribs from the body kick he says he wants another round, WTF!!!………

There was a little more to it but this was getting a bit lengthy so I’ll leave it at that, just doing my part to entertain. Thoughts,,,,,,,,

Link to the first video (YouTube)

Link to the second video (YouTube)

Keep in mind that throughout both fights, the guy is talking trash while he is getting beat by someone who was nice enough not to not knock his teeth out or even kill him. Good stuff.

O’Brien and his O’Boring Style are coming after Lesnar!

Adam Morgan over at Five Ounces of Pain has a notable quote from Jake O’Brien’s agent on a message board. Apparently O’Brien wants to take on newly signed WWE wrestler turned UFC fighter Brock Lesnar.

Jake O’Brien called begging for the fight. I had to remind him he just had titanium rods put in his neck and he is out for 6 more months at least. He forgot.

I honestly don’t care who fights Lesnar first, but if O’Brien gets first shot, he better not repeat his boring smotherfest during UFC Fight Night 8 last January. Laying on top of Heath Herring was not fun, exciting, or even legit MMA. It was Division 1-A wrestling on Spike TV. No thanks!

Not only will O’Brien not get this shot at Lesnar due to the rods in his neck, but the UFC won’t risk their newest star to someone who has slight chance of beating him. (Sorry evil FightLinker guys, Lesnar is the UFC’s newest financial breakout even if he is an evil American wrestler) Lesnar is worth a lot of money to Dana and Co. and they will let him rack up a few easy wins before handing him to the big dogs for a real fight. It’s the same thing they do to most other young MMA fighters and it’s completely logical from a business standpoint. So that brings us to the question: who should Lesnar fight first?

Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva Confirmed. Maybe.

In yet another turn of events in the labyrinth of rumor mills that we call MMA news reporting, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva will apparently meet in UFC 79. Again. Not that it happened already. Instead it was rumored to happen about 17 times before.

So what does this mean? Well, nothing. Not until both fighters show up for the weigh-ins, at least. Even then it could just be a ploy. Who knows anymore.

Liddell says he has some “news” to share with us per his MySpace blog and I’m guessing he will indeed confirm that he is fighting the Brazilian ex-Pride legend. Or that he is retiring. Or training. Or eating walnuts in my backyard with my dogs. I call BS until I see it happening live on a television on December 29th, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Please Mr. Dana White, stop toying with us!

To: Mark Cuban - Re: Reality TV

It was a warm and sunny June day at the LA Coliseum in Los Angeles. The crowd, a supposed 50,000 strong (says the promoting organization after they bought most of their own tickets), was ready for the newest MMA challenger to face his first test. Our celebrity fighter, ex-pro football player turned Mixed Martial Artist Johnnie Morton, was up against then 1-0 Bernard Ackah, a Tae Kwon Do fighter from the Ivory Coast. Not long before the fight was set to take place, Morton acknowledged in an interview that he wasn’t ready for his big league bout against Ackah:

“Those guys are like the NFL level and I’m like the junior high school level, so I’m a long way from facing those guys.”

Morton, despite his lack of MMA experience, decided he still wanted to fight in the K-1/Strikeforce event. The outcome was no surprise to anyone. It was only 20 seconds later, another win chalked up for Ackah, and Morton was taken out of the ring in a stretcher.

The UFC 77 Conference Call in 200 Words or Less

I was reading through the UFC 77 conference call that transpired on Ocotber 11th and for those who are interested in knowing what happens on a UFC conference call, I think I can sum the entire call up in a few short sentences and note the obvious:

  1. The fighters who were on the call: Brandon Vera, Tim Sylvia, Anderson Silva, and Rich Franklin, were all very respectful of each other. I was expecting Tim Sylvia to start grunting, stomping, and cursing. Vera politely called Sylvia a fatass and Silva was muttering in some foreign language about taking his fight seriously. It was Dana White who was acting the fool, but we’ll get to that later.
  2. The UFC, Dana White, nor his beloved matchmaker have any idea on what to do next if Anderson Silva wins again.
  3. They do, however, know that “a lot” of Canadians will be on the UFC fight card in Montreal. Any judges decisions during UFC Canadia will be riddled with hometown favoritism accusations ala UFC 75. This should give us MMA writers a lot of good material. I can’t wait.
  4. Our beloved and scruffy UFC leader, Dana White, did not let anyone down with his responses. Asked whether he was worried about the Pride offices being closed in Japan, he replied with:

Yes, I don’t — this is about the fight in Cincinnati. I don’t want to get into PRIDE shit. If you have a question for these guys about — if you want to interview me about all the crap, call me. You can call my office. Get a hold of Jennifer.

Wow, Dana, you never cease to amaze us.

And that, folks, is what a UFC conference calls is like. Now if only I could get the conference call phone number and code for so I could heckle Dana and Co. about the UFC 78 fight card.

Slow Down, Big Ben

I have a confession to make. I might be the only person on this internets-web-thingy talking about the arts of martial (you know, the Pankrations) that’s never been to the famous “underground”. I know Joe Rogan goes there, and Dana White has been known to interact with fans there, but I’ve never been there. Heard it puts hair on ‘ya chest. I’m not sure if that makes me about it all because I might never have been sullied, or a point and mock target, ala FightLinker.

Whatever the case, I thought of the underground and what they must be saying (a million voices all screaming at once I presume) about this Ben Rothwell character. I’d like to throw in my two cents and be a frontrunner on the backlash bandwagon scheduled to leave a message board near you sometime in the next two months.

I’m referring to the report from Sam Caplan yesterday, and I’m not whoring the guy - Fiveouncesofpain.com - but he says he hear from a guy, who knows a guy, who once met Big Ben. Apparently Ben Rothwell won’t be in the IFL Grand Prix - Kurt Angle swears he’s available - because of contractual issues. If I read this right, Ben is keeping his options open in case someone else asks him to the homecoming dance. He wouldn’t mind going steady with IFL kingfish Kurt Otto again, but I think he’d like a sweeter deal. Perhaps they never “go anywhere anymore!”

TUF, UFC 77, and Dana vs. Tito

Check out an article I wrote for Srawl-n-Brawl.com here about how TUF is good for the Sport. Adam Morgan has been kind enough to let me write for his site as he focuses some of his efforts for 5 Oz of Pain with Sam Caplan while Sam focuses his efforts on working as the head editor of ProElite.com! I am still looking for writers for MMA Opinion so please email me or visit the Contact page.

It looks like the card for UFC 77 is set to go and although there should be some exciting matchups, I don’t see a fun middleweight title fight - at least not for Rich Franklin. You can say that Anderson Silva is over-rated, but I don’t see anyone beating this guy unless they find a way to exploit his game plan because Silva always seems to have an answer to whatever you throw at him. Hopefully we don’t see a repeat of Franklin prematurely crumpling to the ground again for the sake of an exciting fight.

Florian’s Corner fails to Disappoint

floriancrew.jpg

Does Kenny hire his friends and family to corner for him during UFC fights?

I do realize that Ultimate Fight Night 11 isn’t breaking news anymore, but did anyone catch these guys running around the cage? If you go back to Florian’s victory during UFC 73, you may have noticed that the Florian corner turned into a house party after his TKO victory. I certainly can’t complain as it’s refreshing to see some nerds like me who are affiliated with a talented UFC fighter on national television and it certainly gives us something fun to talk about aside from steroids, respectable Pride fighters losing in the Octagon, and the terrible new “strike counting” system that may be put into effect.

Now if only Kenny could change his nickname to something better than “KenFlo” and continue to finish fights like he promises, he’ll be a household name like Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz! War Casual Fans!

Who needs Fedor when you have Giant Silva? This highlight reel came out before UFC 2, but it never gets old.

Yamasaki does it again!

mario.jpg

Only days after the controversial bout in which Murilo Rua was pummeled to near unconsciousness by Robbie Lawler, MMA referee Mario Yamasaki watched another downed fighter take an unnecessary undefended shot to the face during the opening bout of the televised UFC Fight Night 11.

Nate Quarry was getting beat around the ring during the first two rounds of his fight with Pete Sell only to throw some nice leather to take Sell down and out. As Sell laid there dazed and confused, Yamasaki stood over Sell for a few seconds while Quarry watched and waited. Yamasaki said “f it!” and then proceeded to let the fight continue for one more punch. There’s only one thing to say…wow. If I ever decide to fight anymore, please do not let Mario Yamasaki be the referee because I want to live to see my kids graduate high school.
