Cyborg’s Domination of Finney
By Josh Stein on Jun 29, 2010
There’s very little to say about the domination of Jan Finney (8-8 MMA) put on by Strikeforce champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (10-1 MMA, #1 IWMMAR). We knew it was a mismatch going in, and it performed as expected.
There’s something to be said for a very tough Jan Finney, getting herself together after five knockdowns before going out in the second round. Still, that’s not the most impressive part of the fight, in my opinion.
I brought this number to the post-fight press conference and talked about it with some guys, as well as with Cyborg herself, briefly, after the presser: In eight minutes of fighting, Cris Cyborg landed 141 strikes (of 236 thrown) to Jan Finney’s 23 (of 56 thrown). That ratio is absurd. Of course, Finney spent most of the fight looking for Cyborg’s legs, not trying to strike back, but even when the fight was standing, Cyborg managed to land six or seven or more punches at a time, while Finney failed to do hardly any damage at all.
It’s proof that Cyborg is dominant, and that in order to give her a serious fight, Strikeforce is going to have to look for tougher opposition.
Just to contrast the Finney fight, in the five minute bout between Santos and Gina Carano (7-1 MMA, #3 IWMMAR), Cyborg landed 36 strikes (of 64 thrown) to Carano’s 24 (of 47 thrown). Carano, without going into a second round, landed more strikes than Finney.

Nice work Josh. I was arguing with a friend that right now if you are talking about pound for pound fighters you have to mention Cris Cyborg. I know she is a woman and that she would probably not fair well against some of the men, but she is clearly one of the most dominant fighters in MMA right now. And a pound for pound list is supposed to reflect that. Because she’s looked way more dominant overall in her last few fights than Silva or GSP I would say.

Yeah, but, in fairness, she had a sizable weight advantage on Coenen and Finney. It’s hard for me to talk about someone pound-for-pound when their fights are against smaller people.
But, of course, that’s one of the problems with P4P discussions, is that we all have different ways of thinking about what a P4P great is.
Do you think its just that Strikeforce is having a hard time finding suitable opponents at her weight class? She is cleaning out all competition.
