Actually this is HOW an elbow strike should finish a fight! The majority of the time an elbow ends a fight by causing a cut. As far as up kicks go it is only illegal to an opponent who is kneeling, which as Josh points out limits serious injury. I actually believe that up kicks should be allowed because from the guard position it is an effective defensive strike. But I understand why it is not.

This is really stupid, for a number of reasons.

Upkicks are legal against standing opponents. Plenty of fighters who try to stand up in guard get kicked in the face. Secondly, the rule prohibiting kicks (or knees) to the head of a downed opponent do minimize a major risk to the fighter.

Strikes to a downed opponent do more damage than strikes to a standing opponent, when they land flush, and while strikes with the hands and elbows still don't present a serious risk of long term brain or neck injury, that risk increases dramatically with the inclusion of strikes with the knees and feet.

How can a upkick be illegal but an elbow to the face to an opponent on his back be considered legal. If the UFC is going to allow elbows in this manner, it needs to allow upkicks as well.

Whatever he broke he did well in that fight! I think Vera's BJJ is overrated at least in MMA because Jones dominated him on the ground.

I'm assuming that they mean breaks in the cheekbone and/or the orbital. That'd make the most sense.
