Unified Women’s Rankings for February

By Yael Grauer on Feb 02, 2010

In the flyweight division, Megumi Yamaguchi and Jessica Aguilar switched spots, as did Takabayashi and Higo, though I’m not really sure why. Windy Tomomi is no longer ranked at 125 because she is fighting at 115, so everyone moves up a slot and Jeri Sitzes comes in as number 10. In Bantamweight, Jen Tate went up a slot with her defeat of Kaitlin Young, switching with Vanessa Porto. In featherweight, Marloes Coenen goes down a slot due to her loss to Cris Cyborg, putting Toughill in 2nd place.

They gotta change the names on these divisions. The shouldnt have the same name as the mens. Change 145 to middleweight at least then go from there.

They do have the same name as the mens divisions.

The men’s 145 pound division is (it turns out) the featherweight division. Strikeforce called it the “middleweight division” for about five seconds, because they realized it was ridiculous, since there are women who compete at 155, 170, 185, 205, etc.

Of course, those divisions get less attention (just like the mens flyweight division), but they exist and should be referred to as the lightweight, welterweight, middleweight and lightheavyweight divisions, respectively.

Marloes Coenen shouldnt be ranked above Carano either. SHe is 1-2 in her last 3 fights. Just because she made it a round longer with Cybord doesnt mean she is any better.

I would put money on Gina if they ever fought.

You would? I think it would be a good fight, but I’d pick Coenen…not by a 30 second first round knockout or anything ridiculous, but maybe a second round TKO.

Or 2nd round submission. She got Roxy in an armbar like it was nothing.

Yea but Roxy took the fight on about an hours notice(obviously im exaggerating), and she was probably outweighed by 15-20 lbs come fight night. Definately would put money on Gina. I think she looks a lot smoother standing, and is strong enough to defend the takedown against Marloes. I stand by the theoretical bet I would make.

Josh I know women compete in those division, but they will never be big enough to have the divisions in major promotions. 145 is small for a man. 145 is not small at all for a woman. Thats where my reasoning comes from I guess. Im all for everthing else being the same for woman in mma. I just think the divisions should be named differently.

I would put money on Marloes over Gina.
