Jones Seeks Decision Reversal

By Josh Stein on Dec 17, 2009

Jon Jones is looking for a reversal of a decision made by referee Steve Mazzagatti that had him disqualified from his fight with Matt Hamill. Jones thoroughly dominated Hamill up until Mazzagatti stopped the fight after Jones threw an illegal elbow.

NSAC has already come out in support of Mazzagatti, so the chances for Jones are not very good, but he may very well get a rematch with Hamill (a la Johnson vs. Burns, another stupidly handled NSAC decision).

I think that Mazzagatti did the right thing in stopping the fight. If a referee warns you to stop doing something then maybe he should have used a different approach. It is too bad because Jones was dominating, but weirder things have happened. As far as a rematch, hopefully we won’t have to wait to see Jones fight while Hamill heals. Also, I think Hamill’s days in the UFC are limited as he has not beaten anyone as of late.

Except Munoz in the fight before this one. The one where he Kod him with a head kick.

But they definately need to find a way for referees to communicate with Hamil better. Mazagati saying things like defend yourself or ill stop it to a deaf guy is retarted.

Munoz who? Oh you mean the guy who dropped to 185? I would not call a victory over Mark Munoz an impressive victory. And I meant over highly touted opponents.

But I will not fault Hamill in this fight because he hung in there. He know the ref was going to stop it either way and just did not want to go out like a punk I guess.

I honestly don’t think the loss matters. Everyone, including Hammil, knows who won the fight.

Bones is already getting another increase in talent, and a win over Vera would be a huge statement.

How are you supposed to condem Jones? No one can say that Hammil shouldn’t be allowed to fight but how do you deal with a guy who can’t respond to the referre’s instructions? Any other fighter would’ve been punished for not doing what the ref says (I.E. holding the fence). Anyone know what the ruling is on Gary Goodrich style elbows? Legal or not?

Zorak, they’re 12-to-6 elbows, so they’re illegal stateside (and Japan, because of the rules about elbows on the ground).

For those who don’t know what Zorak’s talking about, see Gary Goodridge vs. Paul Herrera (UFC 8 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z2Phyg6qpM)

Those technically werent even 12-6 though. 12-6 is exactly that. Up to down

From what I understand, it still qualifies as “striking downward with the point of the elbow.”
