UFC 108 Suffers Another Setback As Carlos Condit Is Injured

By Bryan Levick on Dec 09, 2009

carlos-condit-ufn-18-weigh-inAnd the hits just keep on coming.

Just weeks before UFC 108 is scheduled to take place, an injury to welterweight Carlos Condit has forced him to withdraw from his co-main event bout with Paul Daley.

MMAJunkie, received the news from sources close to the former WEC welterweight champion.

There is now word on what Condit injured, only that it occured during training.

At this time no replacement has been named.

I wrote about the many injuries that have decimated this card just a few short weeks ago.

Anderson Silva, Brock Lesnar, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Shane Carwin have all at one point been scheduled to fight on this card.

With the rash of injuries that UFC 108 has sustained, the UFC has been forced to move the light heavyweight clash between former UFC light heavyweight champion, Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva to main event status.

At this point, Dana White and Joe Silva really need to find an attractive replacement for Condit, especially if they want to capitalize off of Daley’s new-found fame, which he acquired by knocking out Martin Kampmann at UFC 103.

My suggestion would be to remove Josh Koscheck from his UFC 109 rematch with Paulo Thiago; and put him up against Daley.

Koscheck is always down to fight, and is already training. He suffered very little damage in his UFC 106 bout with Anthony Johnson, and should be good to go.

Whomever they choose, the UFC better do it fast, they are losing pay-per-view buys by the minute.

I do not think they are loosing PPVs by the minute, but I get your point. Why do you think they brought Tito back? So he could strengthen the LHW division? The problem is that there are really only so many guys on the roster who are mainstream “stars” and can carry a PPV card. Aside from Tito, Brock, Couture, and perhaps GSP and Anderson Silva there are not many guys who generate a buzz amongst the casual fans. This is why Chuck will be fighting again and Kimbo was brought in.

My suggestion has always been to get the younger guys out there on Ultimate Fight Nights more often. Showing the undercards free on Spike is a good idea, but getting these up and coming guys more exposure will help immensely. Once a month there should be a card and it could feature guys from TUF as well as others in order to familiarize them with the casual fans. That way when the injury bug hits like this there will be enough familiarity with fighters to move them onto cards.

I would also like to state that the injury situation can be attributed more than likely to over training. A lot of these guys simply train way too much, and if you compare them to other sports, the frequency is probably too much for their bodies to take. Just my opinion.
