Shana Olsen vs. Kaitlin Young This Friday
By Yael Grauer on Dec 09, 2009
Muay Thai specialist Kaitlin Young (4-2) hasn’t been seen in the cage since a controversial stoppage in a bout with Gina Carano (7-1) in May 2008. But the knockout artist will be returning to action this Friday at Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minnesota.
Taking on Young is talented striker Shana Olsen (1-0), who requested the fight despite her relative inexperience. Olsen made her professional debut this past May, where she secured a first round victory against Jessica Kinnetz (0-2).
Other scheduled fights for the event, though subject to change, include Joe “Diesel” Riggs vs. Allen Sullivan, Isaiah Larson vs. Mike Van Meer, Mike Downy vs. Derrick Smith and Steve Merth vs. Nate Schut.
Barring snow, MMA Opinion will be covering this event live. In the meantime, check out this great old video of Kaitlin Young vs. Miesha Tate.

There was nothing controversial with her fight with Carano. Gina was winning the fight and Gina would have probably finished Young in the third if the fight would have continued.
The controversy was that the fight is reported as a medical stoppage, but Kaitlin Young herself reported that the doctor cleared her to fight but the commission would not allow it. Young was also not invited to a post-fight news conference and after party or privvy to a post-fight interview, leading many to conclude that the stoppage had more to do with Young’s black eye than any actual medical reason. Who was winning is, I think, irrelevant.
Yael, I had my post written but not submitted before yours was posted, (homework/multitask delay) my fault.
Yeah, that’s what Kaitlin herself reported, not the whole story apparently, as she graciously just clarified.
Refer Inside MMA after the event. They interviewed ref Kevin Mulhall and he said the Dr. called the fight in contradiction to what Kaitlin had said (again sans recent clarification). State official Nick Lembo also had concurring statements in post event, online interviews. What the fighter reported is only one side of the story. Kind of a glaring omission considering the rest of the conspiring tangents you retorted with, no?
^ oops, meant to be placed 2 posts below…
Whats controversial about the state commisioned Dr. calling the fight.
Like commentator Mauro said, “Kaitlin Young’s face looks like it was put together like a randsom note.”
Kaitlin is a good fighter. There’s no need to question a legit stoppage from an unbiased official to prove that. If Elite-XC held it in a non-regulated state then there could be some room for fixin considering the noted antics of that organization.
If you read what I wrote, what I said was that it was NOT the state commissioned doctor. In fact Young herself reported that the doctor cleared her to fight, but the boxing commission wouldn’t allow it. And then it was (falsely) stated as a doctor stoppage. This is not a “legit stoppage from an unbiased official” and had more to do with appearance than inability to fight. You can fight with a black eye, even if people don’t think it’s pretty.
Since there seems to be confusion, please allow me to clarify.
Gina was totally winning that fight, and had it gone on, she still would have won.
However, the controversial part was the purpose for the stoppage. It was not for my safety, as the cut line that had developed UNDER my left eye and never opened. I was coherent, and had full vision in both eyes. My face looked like hell, but guess what – that happens in MMA. It was superficial. I had no fractures or injuries other than a very well executed shiner.
The first cut doc came to the corner and was going to let me go on when the commission brought over another doctor, who then stopped the bout. I was excluded from the post fight press conference as Yael mentioned, and they didn’t even let me stand in the ring while Gina’s hand was raised. I was not rushed to the hospital, or even out of the arena – just out of the ring – out of the view of the camera.
Later that evening I was told by an employee of proelite (off the record of course) that there had been a discussion with CBS about the amount of blood that was allowed to be shown.
Of course, you wouldn’t know any of that unless you were present at the time. I take nothing away from Gina – but that fight was stopped because they didn’t want the image on television and for no reason other than that. You don’t stop a fight because the other person will likely win the next round, you let it go until she does.
Regardless, its all water under the bridge now. Thanks for the write up Yael.
Kaitlin, I had watched your fights prior to the Gina fight. I didn’t know that the first doctor cleared you to fight. (Though I rewatched the fight and noticed they called a second doctor in which made me scratch my head in confusion) I knew at the time that the fight wasn’t being stopped because you were incapable of fighting, but rather because of the blood. Now that I think about it, the infamous stoppage between Kimbo Slice and James Thompson comes to mind. As does the first Scott Smith/Robbie Lawler fight.
I wish you luck tomorrow.
I rewatched the fight and the same Dr that the ref called in was the one who called the fight. The two Docs that got there 1st (entered from the opposite side as ref and deciding doc) didn’t even get to the fighter as they were behind the cutman and on top of that they were only ahead of the deciding Dr for 3 seconds at the most. Of course its possible that an approval to continue was both estimated and communicated in that obscured and short position but not likely.
Is it possible that the decision was based on venue/politics? Sure, but unfortunately questions about the legitimacy of the decision are
accompanied by contradictions now clarified as miscommunications, as well as evidence(video) that belies integrity.
