WEC Versus Directv: Three ways to fix our problem!
By Curtis Clontz on Oct 12, 2009
WEC 43 was an incredible night of action, or so I was told. Luckily, I was able to watch most of the fights right here on MMAOpinion. If it had not been for the wonders of the internet I would have to wonder just how great Mackens’ triangle was and if the final fight of the night was a good decision or not. This post is for Directv…GO KICK ROCKS! Tons more after the jump.
Kick rocks, go practice falling down, go choke yourself…Use whatever you want, Directv may have the NFL Sunday Ticket, but they do not have Versus.
Chanel 603 on my satellite provider used to be the home for the WEC, Tour De Lance, and everything cool (minus hockey of course). Now when I turn to 603 I hear XM Radio’s The Pulse and get to read a nice statement that reads…
“DIRECTV understands how important NHL is to our customers and we apologize for the inconvenience. Comcast, our largest competitor, has forced us to pull down this channel. Comcast charges us fees to air Versus, and they are now demanding an unfair and outrageous increase in those fees. In these difficult economic times, we do not want to pass this increase on to you, our valued customer, so we are standing firm in the negotiations on your behalf.”
BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are not the good guy because you are protecting me from this…
They have no problem charging me a gazzillion bucks for Showtime so I can see Strikeforce. They have no problem charging me even more for the NFL Sunday Ticket.
What it sounds like to me is a “my penis is bigger than yours” contest and Directv wont budge.
This is really aggravating to a hardcore fan like myself. The WEC provides some of the best fights of the year. Since many of their fighters are up and comers, they put it all on the line every time! That usually makes for much better fight cards, even if the fighters aren’t the cream of the crop.
We have a problem, here is my fix.
I am a huge Duke fan. I am talking HUGE, Grant Hill is my favorite player, even root for the football team huge. To make sure that I get to see all of the games, I have to get an upgraded sports package (not that I wouldn’t have it anyway, but still).
Why not either… (Disclaimer….I am not a TV guy, I don’t know any of the specifics dealing with TV deals….)
A – Add some sort of supplemental sports package that includes channels such as Versus? Instead of having the hockey package that no one gets, put a package together that includes Versus. You could even supplement it with a few other mid tier channels that people really want, possibly the NBA, Golf, and NFL chan…
B – Give your viewers the opportunity to see it. Let me pay an additional 20 bucks a month for the chan. Why not, I pay 50 a pop per UFC PPV…I would imagine I wouldn’t be the only one…
C – Dana…You are a gazillionaire…I pay 50 bucks a pop to see your organization put on fights…PUT THE WEC ON SPIKE!!! Then blame Directv for the entire thing. That would do two things. Make White look like the man and get us the fights.
The worst part is that in the future we are going to miss a incredible fight. We are going to miss Faber make his title push, see the young guns like Mackens shock the world, and many others.
It is a shame that the WEC is not on the largest sat company…It is a shame!

It takes two to tango. You can just as easily blame Comcast. They raised the rates for the channel and DirecTV won’t pay them. A pox on both their houses – it’s not just DirecTV. Let’s hope WEC’s contract with Vs. has an out clause so they can take it to another channel.
