Rumor: Randy Couture vs Brandon Vera To Main Event UFC 105

Bloody Elbow has a post up this morning regarding a potential main event for UFC 105, which is scheduled to take place on November 14th in England.

I wrote about the UFC’s dilemma last week in finding a suitable main event match-up to go along with the co-main event of Britain’s own, Michael Bisping and Denis Kang.

It seems that the UFC has found a man that could sellout an arena and help drive up pay-per-view numbers regardless of who his opponent is. That man is “The Natural”, Randy Couture.

It seems that Couture will make his first appearance as a light heavyweight since losing to Chuck Liddell at UFC 57 back in February of 2006. It was after that bout where Couture stated that we would never see “These shorts or these gloves in the octagon again.”

Thankfully for all of us, Couture made a rousing comeback just 13 months later as he wrestled the UFC heavyweight championship away from Tim Sylvia.

His opponent for UFC 105 will be the underachieving Brandon “The Truth” Vera. It has been some time since the fans have gotten to see “The Truth” at his best. He sat out for 9 months due to a dispute with his management team. In his comeback, also against Sylvia, Vera was not the same fighter who just 9 months earlier had destroyed Frank Mir in just 69 seconds.

After a subsequent loss to Fabricio Werdum, Vera made the drop down to 205lbs, where he went on to win a lackluster unanimous decision against Reese Andy at UFC Fight Night 14 in July of 2008. Since then he has gone 3-1 as a light heavyweight. His most recent win against Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 102 was still the same Vera, who seemed unwilling to engage and very hesitant. Vera has talked about winning titles as both a light heavyweight and heavyweight, if he still has those plans he needs to recapture his old magic.

What better fighter is there to bring out Vera’s best qualities, than Couture. He has a habit of making his opponents dig down a little deeper knowing they are going up against one of the all time greats. Time will tell if “The Natural” can help Vera bring out “The Truth.”
