Hometown MMA: Brodie Leap to cut 30 pounds!
By Curtis Clontz on Jul 30, 2009
From time to time I like to open the doors to the talent hotbed that is Virginia and talk about the local guys. In the past I have talked about Amir Sadollah, Antwain Britt, and Mackens Semerzier. This time around I am going to talk about someone you may have never heard of. His name is Brodie Leap.
The Curtis and Kyle Show is going to cover Brodie in depth, but something in a recent blog post jumped out at me.
Brodie is going to attempt to cut roughly 30 pounds. He has fought at 185, 170, and is now making the long trip to 155. In just over two months he will cut all of this weight.
Anytime a fighter cuts weight he has a bunch of extra training problems that arise. He will have to play close attention to his weight from now until fight day. He will also have to make sure that he doesn’t over train while trying to make the weight drop, and make sure that he stays healthy throughout the process.
Other fighters that you have heard of such as Thiago Alves drop tons of weight. It is a huge part of the sport. People have even recommended that athletic commissions begin regulating it, but I disagree.
Just like the case of the Boston Red Sox pitcher Dice-K, athletes are used to doing certain things. In Dice-K’s position he was used to training a different way before coming to the states. He is now struggling due to the new (mandatory) training regiment.
In MMA fighters are going to do whatever they can to win. Some can cut weight. If you cut too much, then you pay for it in the fight and the long run. A fighters health is the most important but it is up to them to make sure they are healthy.
Brodie’s blog can be found at this link
In it he discusses the real world of MMA from a real person’s position. Make sure you check it out!

What do you guys think? Does the sport as a whole need to regulate weight cutting?
Should fighters be looked at different if they cut that much weight?
At what level should this type of weight cutting be started?
IS IT HEALTHY?
