Why You Should Watch: DREAM 10
By Josh Stein on Jul 18, 2009
As we’ve already reported, DREAM 10 will air live on HDNet, but whether you’re up early or are going to catch it later (and someone on the site will post the videos as soon as possible), it’s going to be a great event.
The main event will feature the master of the triangle Shinya Aoki (20-4-0-1 MMA, #3 IWMMAR) , the top lightweight outside of the UFC, returning to the ring after his tough loss in the welterweight tournament at the hands of Hayato Sakurai (35-8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) . Aoki will take on Brazilian sensation and well respected veteran Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro (20-2 MMA) , another top warrior out of the Nova Uniao academy that seems to be putting out so many top tier fighters, including top featherweights Wagnney Fabiano (12-1 MMA, #3 IWMMAR) and Jose Aldo (15-1 MMA, #4 IWMMAR).
The card will also (and perhaps most importantly) feature the semi-finals and finals of its welterweight tournament, which has provided a great deal of excitement so far.
The welterweight tournament will conclude on DREAM 10, after an opening round that saw that incredibly shocking 27 second knockout of Aoki by Sakurai. Lithuanian warrior Marius Zaromskis (9-2 MMA) will take on Sakurai in the semi-final round.
On the other side of the bracket will be future top ten welterweight and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu phenom Andre Galvao (3-0 MMA), and if you’ve been around the site a little while, it’s no secret that I think Andre Galvao is a monster, and with a submission game like he has, he’s going to be a threat to anyone he fights. His next opponent will be Jason High (9-1 MMA), who put on the fastest submission of the opening round, choking out Yuya Shirai (15-8 MMA) in fifty-nine seconds.
Also on the card will be K-1 veteran Marvelous Melvin Manhoef (23-5-1 MMA), as he takes on the only Brazilian lumberjack Paulo Filho (16-1 MMA). Filho is looking to get back on track after his disasterous loss to Chael Sonnen (23-10-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC), in which Filho missed weight and then looked not simply outclassed, but completely and utterly confused in the cage. Filho is a huge favorite if he can get the fight to the ground, but that’s a big if against a fighter capable of exploding like Manhoef.
Overall, it should be a great event.
