Aaron Simpson vs. Ed Herman

By Yael Grauer on Jul 14, 2009

Aaron “A-Train” Simpson (pictured left) has revealed his opponent for UFC Fight Night 19, and it appears that he will be facing none other than Ed “Short Fuse” Herman. (Herman’s camp, Team Quest Portland, did not respond to repeated requests for comment). I’m not sure what happens when you mix an A-Train with a short fuse, but I’m guessing there’s gonna an explosion in the Octagon on September 16th.

Although Aaron Simpson is a world class wrestler, he has won all five of his MMA bouts by way of knockout. Simpson spent close to a decade as an assistant wrestling coach at ASU, where he worked with future MMA fighters Ryan Bader, Cain Velasquez and CB Dollaway. He even spent a month in Big Bear helping Tito Ortiz with his wrestling while Ortiz was training for a fight with Rashad Evans. Simpson continues to train at Arizona Combat Sports, a gym widely regarded as one of the best MMA camps in the country.

Ed Herman has been fighting for six years, accruing a record of 15-7 including 4 knockouts and 5 submissions. His UFC record is 4-4, but his losses have come to some pretty stiff competition: Kendall Grove, Jason McDonald, Damian Maia and Alan Belcher. Herman trains at Team Quest’s Portland location, which is also stacked with some pretty impressive MMA fighters including Ryan Schultz, Jake Ellengerger, Matt Lindland, and Chael Sonnen. Herman’s most recent fight was a decision victory over David Louiseau.

Simpson vs. Herman is an interesting matchup for sure, which will make for an exciting fight on September 16th.

Herman needs a win, and this is a tough outing! Could be a bad match up for Ed.

I never thought Short Fuse was a good fighter. Looks like it is back to the minors for him….sorry…but it is what it is.

Deep down I have to root for him. He gave me one of my better interviews and talked on the phone with me for almost an hour!

Aaron Simpson gave me one of my best interviews (if not the best), Curtis, so I know the feeling!

I guess I kind of had a bad taste in my mouth about Ed Herman from his “does anybody here know who I am” antics on TUF, but I’m sure they played that up a bit.

hey Curtis, I read your Herman interview. He trained at Sportslab? I visited there once when I was in Portland, back when Greg Thompson was there. He is an awesome coach. But I think Greg and a bunch of his students (incl. Nate Quarry) started a different gym. And Sportslab is definitely not at all affiliated with Team Quest. Interesting stuff.
