Chuck Liddell is going to ride the pine
By Curtis Clontz on Jul 05, 2009

This afternoon I was perusing the net, enjoying what is left of my weekend. Mixed between Manny talk, go Lance!, and the sad news about Air McNair I came across a post at SI.com about Chuck Liddell. It has been said that time heals all wounds, sounds like this is the approach Chuck is taking…
Some of you may remember the last time Chuck fought. He suffered a heart breaker from Mauricio Rua. Once that fight ended it seemed that Chuck was being pushed toward retirement. Not once did he say he was done, but Joe Rogan and everyone that talked on a mike for the UFC swore that we would never see Chuck in the cage ever again.
The former posterboy of the UFC told SI that…
“Hopefully my brain can heal over time,” he continued. “The shot last fight is something that normally wouldn’t hurt me. I think I need at least some time off from getting hit. I’m going to take time off sparring then. I’ll train still. Still gonna roll. I’ll probably do a little more jiu-jitsu than normal because I like it. It’s fun.”
Chuck also said that it would be April of 2010.
Some are going to start relating Chuck to Brett Favre or even Brett Michaels, saying that he doesn’t know when enough is enough, and that he should just retire all ready. Although Chuck has lost his last four of five, if he does not want to throw in the towel, then I hope he wont.
I see it this way. There are tons of people that wake up everyday thinking that they hate their lives. The last thing they want to do is go slave at their job. If you have a job that you truly enjoy and can get paid to do, then do it.
Chuck, don’t hang those gloves up until you are good and well ready.

At 39 (40 in December) he needs to take some time. I am not saying Chuck will ever come back to his former self, but if he wants to fight in a year who would say no to a “super fight” type of deal. I would love to see him fight Franklin at 205. But unlike Dana and others, Chuck is taking the best approach. If he takes time off, then comes back and looks sharp, fights once maybe twice a year, hey look at Couture.
