Kimbo is perfect for TUF!

By Curtis Clontz on Jun 29, 2009

kimboIf I was to tell you that Kevin Ferguson is the most important contestant in the history of TUF, would you agree?  I am here to tell you that he very well could be.  TUF 10 is going to be the most anticipated season in the history of the show.  Not because of fighters such as Roy Nelson, Justin Wren, and Marcus Jones, but because of one man that many consider to be a joke.  Kimbo Slice is that man, and he is the most important participant in the history of TUF!

Slow your roll, let me explain.  Read the words carefully.  I did not say he is the best, has the most up side, or that he is even a good MMA fighter.  What I did say is that he is the most important.

Have you seen the Kimbo Slice TUF 10 commercial (if not its at the bottom)?  I call it the Kimbo Slice commercial because he is pretty much the only contestant in it. That is nothing more than a precursor to next seasons show.  They could probobly call it TUF:  The Kimbo Slice Show.

Kimbo Slice is not on the same level of any of the current UFC heavys.  He does not have a ground game, and has never beat what many would call a formidable opponant.  However, Slice does have his popularity and hype.  No one in TUF history has ever had this type of following, popularity, and entourage.

Many of the hard core MMA media types think that Kimbo’s hype is undesereved, but think about this…  His incredible drawing power led to over 2.4 millions viewers in the last 30 minutes of his fight against James Thompson.  In his last fight for Elite XC and first MMA loss, he helped draw over 4.3 million dollars.  No one in TUF history can say that…

What does all of this mean?

This all adds up to Kimbo being the most important contestant ever on TUF.  He alone has helped guys out side of the UFC get over  a billion viewers.

The UFC’s reality show has been on a decline in recent years.  You are constantly hearing the echoes of people hating on the show, as it continuous to disapoint.  It even got bad enough for the UFC to lean on a phycho acting Junie Browning to draw viewers.  Some even considered this to be the worst season ever, and the begginning of the end of TUF.

Fast forward a bit, TUF 9 was ok.  The UFC was lucky enough to have the Finale show saved by 2 of the best fights of the year.

TUF 10 is one of size.  Kimbo is the smallest of the contestants but only in matters of size.  He is the most popular fighter that will be in the house.  Kimbo is a phenomenon, and internet sensation that has tons of prove and is in a lose lose situation.

Win or lose Kimbo Slice will make TUF a MUST watch the show.  He will not only make people want to tune it, but will take TUF back to a can not miss weekly event.

From both sides of the fence, the UFC will use Kimbo to tune in.  Odds are he will be “tactically” used throughout the show.  Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t fight until late in the first round, and is around the house for some time.  It will also not be a shocker if he is placed on the Ultimate Finale so that the UFC can use his fame at least one more time.

Kimbo is not a favorite to win season 10.  He isn’t even considered to be one of the top ten fighters in the house, but he is incredibly important to the success of the next season.  He may not win, but he is without a shadow of a doubt the most important fighter ever for The Ultimate Fighter.

    Yeah, ditto!
I don’t think there ever was a season when a contestant was highlighted over the judges. Rampage* is pretty popular but he’s not Kimbo. The fighters that complain about Lesnar or Kimbo really need to fall back and learn. Tito Ortiz may not be the best LHW in UFC history but he’s definitely one of the most important. There’s a reason he still remains popular after losing several fights, he aggressively promotes the Tito brand. He’ll draw an audience quicker than Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida.

*While people are judging Rampage for skipping out on an opportunity to face Machida for the belt, he’s going to win financially by appearing on TUF 10. If this season is as huge as Spike TV hopes it will be, Rampage will be able to sell a t-shirt or two.

Too bad I doubt Kimbo will make it past his 1st fight. And yeah, if I was a Spike TV exec, Kimbo’s fight would air after the other no-name fighters.

TUF 9 was good. By that, I mean the fights were pretty good.

I thought people would smash this article… I completely agree with you Vee!

I am going to smash it lol! Kimbo will help to put the nail in the TUF coffin! If he gets beat down the Kimbo lovers will stop watching. Also the Kimbo haters will probably stop watching! Plus Kimbo will hog the camera time, and Spike will try to feature him every chance they get, no matter how well he does or how badly. No matter what happens it will be the Kimbo show and people will grow tired of it, especially if he goes out in the first round of fights
Personally I am curious how the four former NFL players will fair. Especially Marcus jones, a former first round pick. Johnnie Morton and Michael Westbrook tried, Westbrook at least trains seriously by all accounts, but these guys seem ready. This may be a point the UFC is failing to market in my opinion.

    Bill thanks for the reply!

I think Dana and the UFC crew will use Kimbo to get people to watch, but exploit him at all costs. Although Kimbo is the lock, he is not the key.

Kimbo will make everyone watch, the others guys will keep them interested, as the UFC finally uses TUF to build on their heaviest division.

At the same time, it could be a complete disaster. People could finally see Kimbo for the joke he is, and once he is defeated then turn off the show calling it a joke, but I don’t see it happening (turning it off that is).

I agree with the article. When I heard the news Kimbo was going to be on the next season of TUF it made me want to forget about this season of TUF and start watching next season. This season wasn’t even that bad. It had no outrageous drunken stupidity that I can remember. It was by far the best season for me in a long time.

I have always thought of Kimbo the person as a somewhat respectable guy. However I have been a hater of Kimbo the fighter. So I am really looking forward to the next season of TUF to see how things play out and I actually hope Kimbo succeeds this time. I don’t see him winning the show but I think he can be somewhat successful without actually winning the show.

Matt you bring up a good point. Kimbo does not have to win the show for it to be a successful venture. Lets face it, if the UFC let Andy Wang get a fight, who’s to say they wont do the same for Kimbo.

Is it a fair statement to say that Kimbo and Houston Alexander have about the same ground game?

  7. Matt C. says:
    June 30, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I think that Houston Alexander and Kimbo comparison is a fair comparison.

Also the UFC did just create a Houston Alexander action figure didn’t they? If they can make money off Houston Alexander action figures then I would think Kimbo could be a cash cow compared to Houston Alexander in that respect.

  8. curtis says:
    June 30, 2009 at 9:03 pm

    Matt I agree!

Houston was the benefactor of a few wins…In the stand up UFC world we live in, I almost think Kimbo could be a cash cow!

Unfortunately for him, most of the big guys know how to wrestle, and he pretty much don’t.. (in comparison)

I am starting to sound like a huge Kimbo homer but I am far from such…

  9. Bill says:
    July 1, 2009 at 11:16 am

I think Houston has a better ground game than Kimbo, at least wrestling wise. But MMA grappling or BJJ they may be the same. But With the exception of Kongo, Herring, and Cro Cop the HW division is full of grapplers, so to think he would do well is a little bit un-realistic. And at 30 plus thinking he is going to pick up enough to really compete outside of TUF is crazy!

  10. Mitch Gunslinger says:
    July 1, 2009 at 11:40 am

Yep….Kimbo will bring in viewers. Once he is knocked into a coma…the show will decline in ratings. Through the power of editing…we will witness this near the end of round 1. The UFC is smart bringing him in to “save” the show. He will for a bit…until he is concussed and out of the competition.

  11. Bill says:
    July 1, 2009 at 6:03 pm

I have always thought the best way to make TUF “better” would be to bring in camps. It would be interesting for example to have guys from say Teamquest vs. Militech or Jackson’s guys vs. Extreme Couture. They could get their “top fighters” to come in and help train. Let the teams hold their own tryouts and go from their. I cannot believe that Randy Couture, Greg Jackson, Pat Militech, etc… would willingly bring in a Junie Browning. You could still do the Coaches challenge and have two top fighters fight later on for hype, but it would bring more MMA to the show and less Jackass!

  12. VEe says:
    July 2, 2009 at 6:41 am

. . . Bill, cool idea but each of those camps would probably want money. Some type of future compensation for residual sales, etc. The guys on TUF being compensated for their time are the judges and the guys who win fights by a stoppage . .. the cool $5,000 doesn’t hurt.

Like Bas Ruten said, Kimbo’s escapes during the 1st round against Thompson were really great. From the 2nd round and beyond, he gassed and reverted back to his old habits.
