Erin Toughill to Fight on August 15th
By Josh Stein on Jun 27, 2009
Well, Gina Carano (7-0 MMA) and Christiane “Cyborg” Santos (7-1 MMA) will not be the only high profile female fighters on the Strikeforce card set for August 15th. Erin Toughill (10-2-1 MMA) will return to action against an unknown opponent on the card, though it’s not clear whether the bout will appear on the main card or the undercard.
Toughill has been mentioned as a top fighter and a potential first defense for whoever takes home the women’s 145 pound title belt. Either of the two potential champions, Carano or Santos, would struggle with a boxing and MMA veteran like Toughill, who returned from a twenty-six month hiatus to fight with Palace Fighting Championships in November of 2008.
Since returning to full contact, Toughill is 3-0, but has only finished one of her three opponents (though finishes are expected to be less common three minute rounds). Still, Toughill has incredible standup and respectable all around skills, as well as great athleticism, and has not really been beaten since 2000 (Toughill’s loss in 2004 came as a result of an illegal strike; not that it’s any less of a loss, but it does speak to Toughill’s consistency).
Depending on her opponent, this could make for a great fight or a potential hype-building matchup as Toughill looks to take her place as the top contender in the 145 pound weight class.
