Huerta vs. Maynard Official
By Josh Stein on Jun 26, 2009
While it’s not clear whether the fight will take place on the UFC 103 card or UFC Fight Night 19 (most sources tend to favor the later, but it may be moved to Dallas). Roger Huerta (20-2-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) is making the final bout of his UFC contract. Though Huerta has become a high profile fighter, becoming the first MMA fighter to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated and having well documented relationships (*yawn*). He has taken a long hiatus to pursue his career as an actor.
Huerta hasn’t fought since August of 2008, when he lost to Kenny Florian (11-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC, #2 IWMMAR ) by unanimous decision, a fight which followed an eight month layoff after his bout with Clay Guida (25-10 MMA, 5-4 UFC) , which he won by rear naked choke. While there were rumors that he might fight Sean Sherk, he’s now set to fight Gray Maynard (7-0-0-1 MMA, 5-0-0-1 UFC, #10 IWMMAR ) who has been on a roll since having issues with a no contest against Rob Emerson (8-7-0-1 MMA, 2-1-0-1 UFC) in his UFC debut. The undefeated Maynard hasn’t finished a fight since September of 2007, but has won four high profile fights, which includes a victory over Frank Edgar (10-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC, #7 IWMMAR ) .
This bout is certainly pay-per-view quality, though I doubt it will be on a main event if it ends up on the UFC 103 card. It may end up as a main event attraction if it appears on the Ultimate Fight Night card. There is only a three day difference between the two events, with the UFN appearing on September 16th and UFC 103 on September 19th. Both, hopefully, will be solid events.
