Chris Lytle to Run for Political Office
By Josh Stein on Jun 23, 2009
In perhaps the most interesting story of the day (admittedly, a day with very few stories), MMAJunkie is running a short piece on the potential of a political career for UFC veteran Chris Lytle (27-17-5 MMA, 7-9 UFC). Lytle apparently commented on his desire for a political career in his home state of Indiana stating, jokingly, “I can lie with the best of them, my friend.”
The former firefighter, who took home UFC Fight of the Night honors four times (along with KO and Submission of the night once apiece), has long been noted as a charismatic and likable figure in the UFC, and his stint on TUF 4 (where he was runner-up in the welterweight division after a controversial loss to Matt Serra) offered him some mainstream media coverage.
It’s hard to believe that MMA shares many qualities with political life, but it’s not as though it’s unheard of for a professional fighter to step into the political arena. Matt Lindland ran for the House of Representatives in his home state of Oregon last year, winning the Republican primary against Phyllis Thiemann by a sizable margin, and losing in the general election to Suzanne VanOrman.
