Superstars training MMA to gain edge.
By Curtis Clontz on Jun 06, 2009
In the world of sports, there are tons of very different ways to train. Each program is designed with one goal in mind, and that is supremacy. Each athlete wants to achieve greatness on one level or another, and a solid workout program is a must. Recently stars have been branching out into the MMA world to gain an edge on competition. Shaq was in the news a few weeks ago, but this time it is a Heisman Trophy winner and QB in the NFL.
The Curtis and Kyle Show recently posted information on Matt Leinart’s MMA training and how he is trying to use the sport to lose his tag of being soft.
It is no question that the sport of MMA is far different from any of the sports that these athletes compete in. In Shaq’s case, he has been a dominant force in the National Basketball Association for some time, and has won 4 NBA titles. He is using this new training to combat father time as much as the competition. He is getting older and trying to avoid losing a step. The footwork, explosion, and strength he is gaining by this new training will easily transition to the hardwood. This will make his drop step stronger, and allow him to use his height and strength, to jam the ball with hurricane force strength in an unstoppable manner. In all honesty it will keep get him in better shape. This will allow him more minutes without injuries, that would cause him to watch Grant Hill and the suns make another run instead of help with it.
In the case of Leinart, he is out to prove something completely different. He is using the sport to make him more of a man! He is known as being soft around the NFL water cooler, and he is tired of it. He is using real fighters, and they are really beating on him. He is not only changing his image by getting tough, he is also getting stronger. The most important part of this training for him is not only physical, but most important the mental aspect. Since coming into the league, Leinart has been benched and has been rumored to have a tough time with the transition. The training he is getting with the likes of Ryan Bader, and C.B. Dollaway is something he has never seen. They are putting him in situations where he has to make quick decision. This will help him on the field because he has had trouble making quick decisions in the past. He has had trouble seeing the disguised cover two or the safety that is lurking behind the backers.
Without a doubt, more superstar athletes will begin to use this type of training. It is a win/ win opportunity, and is loads of fun. I promise you Shaq and Matty are just the tip of the iceberg. Season 10 of TUF has already reported that they will have several former NFL players on their roster along side Kimbo. I look forward to seeing the workouts from the various sports combining to make super workouts for superstar athletes.
