UFC 98 immediate reactions
By Curtis Clontz on May 24, 2009
UFC 98 is in the books and overall it was a decent night of fights. I for one had a little more emotion invested in this card, but overall I don’t feel dissapointed. It is now the era of the Dragon! Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and other old school dojos are filling up as we speak. UFC 98 immediate reactions after the jump.
I liked UFC 98, but I know that around the world fans are screaming!
-We have seen eras coming to a close of late, could Sherk’s be next on the list? A mirror image of the Sherk who fought Penn showed up tonight. He didn’t look unimpressive, but he was simply not the better fighter tonight. While Sherk’s career may be winding down, Edgar’s just took a jump!
-The decision fans will be talking about is the Hughes unanimous decision victory over Matt Serra. When Buffer said that it was unanimous I knew without a shadow of a doubt that Serra won, guess I was wrong. Not everyone at my house was in agreeance (I may have made that word up), I can only image what the Serra lovers are saying. All in all, I anticipated this. I figured it would go to the cards, and if it did they would prob say Hughes and not Serra. That being said Hughes didn’t look great, he showed glimpses, but also showed he does not posses any stand up that could hang with any of the top 3 or 4 in the division. A date with GSP or Alves would be asking for your career to go out on a loss. Does Dana really have a decision to make with Hughes, probobly not. It is time to call it a day Mr. Hughes.
-It is now the era of the Dragon. The most surprising fact isn’t that the two fighters barely threw punches in the first round, but that Machida looked very impressive. The karate base with quick movements and incredible counter punching helped him drop former champ Rashad Evans. I mean DROP! People say you have to beat the champ to be the champ. Lyoto Machida crushed the champ! Congrats to Machida and all of the Machida lovers!

I think the Hughes/Serra fight was bland over all. Neither fighter was impressive. And Serra had all the potential to shine tonight. I think Matt pushed the fight forward just enough to win the judges over. In hind site Serra should have went to the ground early and went to work.
Machida is awesome.
Great site I love it and can’t stop reading.
Well everyone who joins the “traditional” Tae Kwon Do and Karate Dojos better realize that they are not going to be trained or train like Machida. But overall it was a good night of fights. I knew Serra lost, I said he would, and I hoped to be wrong. He just didn’t do enough on the ground. Hughes fought the way Sherk Should have, take down and control on top. Although he really did nothing every sub attempt he escaped got him points. Sherk won’t be done, he’ll shoot up and be back.
