“Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz” weigh-in results

Cyborg fails to make weight on her first try, and will have until 8:00 PM to make the cut. Josh and I attended today’s “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz” weigh-ins at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Fans and media tightly packed into “The Grill” restaurant in anticipation of the event. Issues of fighter medicals and some organizational hang-ups slowed the start time of the weigh-ins. The restlessness of the fans and media, however, was quelled by the appearances of star MMA fighters such as Josh Barnett, Alastair Overeem, and Robbie Lawler.

Event headliners Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz both made their catchweight limits (179 pounds). Diaz stuck to his usual confrontational style as he and Shamrock taunted each other during the stare down. Diaz had some choice words to Shamrock and the crowd as he exited the stage. “Make sure to ask Frank about the [expletive]-ass tattoo on the small of his back,” he said.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos was the only main card fighter who failed to make weight. She weighed in at an astonishing 152 pounds– 7 pounds over the weight limit. The commission announced that Cyborg needs to be within 6 pounds of her opponent, Hitomi Akano. Akano weighed in at 143.5 pounds. Cyborg will have a few hours to cut the weight and will weigh in a final time at 8:00pm PST. Even if Cyborg is able to make the weight, she will likely be forced to forfeit a significant percentage of her fight purse to Akano.

Preliminary card fighter Brandon Michaels also failed to make weight for his bout. He will also be given additional time to cut 1.5 pounds in order to make 186 pounds.
