UWC Update: War Machine vs. Reshad Woods Press Release

By Curtis Clontz on Apr 06, 2009

Luke Thomas from Bloodyelbow.com broke this story on his radio show a few weeks ago.  Since that time the UWC released the following press release about the fight.

“The Ultimate Fighter” & UFC Vet “War Machine” Enters the Nation’s Capital to Take on Local Standout Reshad Woods

Washington, DC – East coast regional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) powerhouse the UWC – Ultimate Warrior Challenge formally announced today that a catch weight bout of 175lbs  between War Machine (Jon Koppenhaver) and local rising star Reshad Woods will serve as the co-feature at “UWC 6: Capital Punishment “, April 25th at the George Mason University Patriot Center Arena in Fairfax, VA.

“As a DC-based operation that’s also the largest professional MMA show on the East Coast, we have a responsibility to find and showcase the MMA stars of tomorrow from this area,” said UWC CEO S. Marcello Foran. “But we also have a responsibility to have DC’s best fight the best from around the nation.  In keeping with that duty, we are proud to announce War Machine vs. Reshad Woods  for UWC: Capital Punishment. Woods has steamrolled his last four opponents and is looking for bigger challenges, while War Machine is seeking redemption and to prove he can be a title contender. Given where they are in their career, this is the perfect fight for both fighters.”

War Machine (Jon Koppenhaver) is 7-2, is a veteran of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” season 6 and a two-time veteran of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He trains out of MMA legend Randy Couture’s world-class fight facility and team Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas , NV as well as SD Undisputed in San Diego , CA . A controversial figure in the sport of MMA for unfiltered outbursts and opinions that eventually affected his placement in the sport, War Machine is now managed by Ken Pavia and is looking for image redemption. After losing to Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC 84 in August of 2008, War Machine has won his last two fights stopping both opponents in under one round.

Reshad Woods  is 4 -1 and trains with Lloyd Irvin from Team Lloyd Irvin in Camp Springs , MD.   Woods typically fights at middleweight and holds the most celebrated knockout (KO) win in UWC history over now fellow teammate Ron Stallings from UWC 4: Invasion in April of 2008.  He trains with UFC veteran Brandon Vera and UWC vets Ron Stallings and UWC bantamweight champion Mike Easton. Woods is both an adept kickboxer as well as a seasoned judo player. All four of his professional wins come by way of first round stoppage due to strikes.

“Woods is on a tear to the top and War Machine has tasted glory but is working his way back up,” said Foran. “There isn’t space for every contender, so something has to give. Woods’s vicious stoppages have proven he’s the best in the area, but he needs to test himself in deeper waters. War Machine was a hot prospect after the reality show, but let personal demons get in the way. Now he’s refocused and has looked excellent in his last two tough fights. Both fighters have a lot to prove here and the stakes couldn’t be higher. This fight is going to be a real treat for fans of high-level MMA in Washington , DC .”

UWC: CAPITAL PUNISHMENT will be held Saturday April 25, 2009 at the George Mason University Patriot Center Arena in Fairfax , Virginia . Tickets for the event will be available via Ticketmaster and the show will be streamed live over the Internet on Sherdog.com. For more information, visit www.uwcmma.com.

This will be a good fight – both are equally hungry for money and its seems like both have their share of legal problems

I hope Warmachine doesn’t gas like he did on the show. Woods is already a great fighter but now that he is with an elite camp he will be just about unstoppable. Woods deserves to fight a hard fight. Im excited to see this.
