Quick Picks: UFC Fight Night Condit vs. Kampmann
By Curtis Clontz on Mar 31, 2009
Tomorrow night the UFC steps foot in the great state of Tennessee for the first time. Although it isn’t a huge card, it is an average one. The weigh-ins are complete and the mood is set for the action to begin. The following are my picks for the main card of the event. Don’t forget to head over to the MMAOpinion chat room and drop in on the best live chat around during the event! Picks are after the jump…
Cole Miller vs. Junie Browning
This fight very well could be the most anticipated one on the fight card. Love him or hate him, Junie will most likely make you want to tune in. The UFC needed a new bad guy, and thanks to Junie they have one. On paper Cole should win this fight with little to no problem, but you know what you can do with that paper. I look for Junie to make it an interesting fight. Until it hits the ground that is. That is where Cole will take over and control the fight. Originally I seen this one ending by submission, but the more I study it, the more I think the fight will go to the cards. Cole will still win pretty handily. Miller by unanimous decision.
Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
Griffin is a decision king. All but one of his fights in the UFC have gone to a decision, losing only twice (Sherk and Edgar). His strength is his overall game. He hasn’t shown true KO power and has only 1 submission. He doesn’t do anything great, but does a lot of things good. Dos Anjos is a jits guy that would love to get this fight to the ground! Although Griffin’s overall game may be better, his background may play into the hands of Dos Anjos a bit. Griffin will look for the take down in some sort of scramble, once he does he is in trouble.
Dos Anjos by submission.
Ryan Bader vs. Carmelo Marrero
Bader is starting to become one of the faces of the 8th season of TUF. His wrestling background has been talked about over and over again, and his stand up game is starting to come around. After his KO on the Finale he is ready to show he is the real deal. Carmelo is also a solid wrestler with great conditioning. People often say a wrestler is in trouble when he fights a better wrestler. Bader is the better pure wrestler of the two. He will be able to use his size to set up a take down. The take down will lead to some serious ground and pound ending the fight.
Bader by TKO
Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann
Carlos has one of the best nicknames in the sport. Anyone known as the Natural Born Killer has to be a born cage fighter. The WEC better hope so. Condit is their best chance to prove they aren’t the minor leagues. This fight feels like a warm up fight in many ways for Condit. Although Martin is a tough competitor, he is currently a gatekeeper (if only 1 loss counts as a gatekeeper). The winner of this fight takes a giant leap in the 170 pound division! Kampmann is a solid fighter, but Condit’s dangerous ground game and solid stand up will help him prevail. I usually like to call stoppages, but I see this one going to the cards. Carlos should control this fight getting him the nod.
Condit by unanimous decision.
