Matt Hamill to take on Brandon Vera in Pa

By Curtis Clontz on Mar 29, 2009

The much anticipated fight card in Pensylvania continues to get better and better.  The main event with Penn vs. Florian seems to be a lock, and the addition of Hamill vs. Vera will add depth to the event.  www.mmamadness is reporting that they have confirmed the fight between Hamill and Vera will take place.

Matt Hamill is a solid 205 pounder.  Since joining the UFC he is 6-2.  The two losses were at the hands of Rich Franklin and Michael Bisping.  Many feel that Hamill got robbed with the Bisping decision, but that is a conversation for another day.  Hamill’s most recent win was against Mark Munoz.  The KO victory over Munoz was his first full KO of his career.  Hamill seems to be a wrestler that prefers to strike.  His stand up skills have improved tremendously ever since his run on TUF.  His wrestling game is still considered to be one of the best in the 205 pound division.  This is a good fight for Hamill.  It will be one where his striking skills will be tested.

Brandon Vera was rumored to be on rough water prior to his last fight.  He won, crisis averted, and here he is taking on Matt Hamill.  Brandon Vera very well could be on the cusp of a huge winning streak.  He is feeling confident after his most recent win against Michael Patt.  In his UFC career he is 6-3.  The marque win of his career came in 2006 against Frank Mir.  After that win he was supposed to be the next monster of the UFC.  After a short hiatus from the cage he returned and was a bit rusty.  He had a streak of 3 losses in 4 fights, but may have his problems resolved.  This will be no cake walk for Vera.  Hamill is a very hard headed fighter that can take pain.  Vera’s striking should be better, but Hamill’s wrestling is better.  This is a great match up of styles and should be a solid fight for the fans in PA.

I’m pretty pumped for a big event near me. The last event, UFC 78, had a boring main card in paper and this looks like a lot of fun.

    This will be exciting.
Hopefully Hamill isn’t one of those wrestlers that improved their striking and forget that they are really great at wrestling, abandon takedowns as part of a smart offensive strategy.
I’m wondering, will Brandon Vera be able to overwhelm Hamill with Muay Thai strikes from a distance?
Will Hamill simply over-power Brandon Vera?

The mix of styles and approaches will make this fight interesting. I’m really glad Brandon Vera is more humbled and focused. He should thank the UFC for feeding him Mike Platt to boost his confidence.

Brandt is right UFC 78 sucked on paper and on PPV, live it wasn’t that bad except the main card was more for a UFN. I like Vera in this match up (even though I am not a fan of his). Hammill’s striking may have improved but that is not saying much. If he tries to bang with Vera it will end like the Franklin fight, who does not have Vera’s Muay Thai skills. On the ground Hammill has the wrestling ability over Vera, but Vera’s BJJ game is alot better than Hammill’s. I don’t see this as a “classic match up” between a wrestler and BJJ because I think Vera has too many options on the ground and standing up. I say Vera KO 1st round.

bill I dont understand the last statement you said,I think Vera has too many options on the ground and standing up. I say Vera KO 1st round. Are you saying that vera had many option on the ground and standing up and KO matt hamill or youre saying that vera get killed from matt hamill.., what ever.,but for me I think vera has the better fighting skills than matt and I know even if matt will take the fight on the ground I know vera has great defensive stuff he can also reverse it,in the stand up position I know vera can avoid a real damage from matt hamill and counter the strikes of matt hamill like what he did in his fight with jardin.,I there for conclude that Vera will knock out matt the hammer hamill at the mid point of the fight…
