Mir Injured; UFC 98 Rematch Cancelled
By Josh Stein on Mar 06, 2009
Frank Mir has been forced to cancel his bout with Brock Lesnar in what would have been a title unifying rematch between the two UFC heavyweights. FiveOuncesofPain broke the story and has a brief summary of the impact.
It remains to be seen what this will do, if the UFC will arrange for an alternate contender for Lesnar. Now we just sit around waiting for the fallout. The UFC 98 matchup has been discussed for a while, and was officially announced earlier this week.
For those who don’t remember the first fight, it ended with Lesnar tapping out to a kneebar. I suppose we’ll have to wait to see how the second installment goes.

sweet.
does this just make Lesnar the undisputed champion? I ownder how this will play out.
I wonder who they will scramble to headline the card now….lets be honest… Hughes vs. Serra is not a PPV main event. I say that and I am a Hughes fan.
If Franklin vs. Henderson, Franklin vs. Silva, or Sanchez vs. Stevenson can headline an event, why can’t Hughes vs. Serra??
Because Hughes vs. Serra doesn’t put anyone in title contention and it doesn’t have the level of hype it did after the show.
There’s a huge group of fans (not me, for the record) that regards the Hughes vs. Serra matchup as a novelty that was played out after Serra and Hughes were both destroyed by GSP in their rematches.
Franklin vs. Henderson was a PPV event because it was for a TUF coaching spot and it was a matchup a lot of people cared about. Sanchez vs. Stevenson wasn’t a PPV event, and didn’t air on PPV. I don’t think Silva vs. Franklin will either, but that remains to be made official.
I actually think it’s a fine main event, but it needs a good co-main event if I’m going to pay $50 for it. (“me” is a hypothetical, because I’ll be watching it from a sports bar)
