Giant News: Tim Sylvia will Fight Ray Mercer

By Garrett Bailey on Feb 25, 2009

tim-sylvia

Tim Sylvia will face Ray Mercer in a boxing match in the main event of Adrenaline MMA III at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J May 30. Mmajunkie.com confirms a fiveouncesofpain.com report that a Sylvia vs Mercer boxing match was in the works.
The 47 year old boxer is coming off a win against a top 5 ranked 30-2 boxer and is 6-2 since 2002.
Monte Cox tells MMAjunkie.com:

“You just have no idea who is going to win,” Cox said. “I don’t care if he’s 47 (years old). He’s been boxing his whole life, won an Olympic gold medal, went to split decision with Lennox Lewis. Believe me, he’s going to hit hard. Tim’s going to have a hard time.”

Tim Sylvia’s last fight came against Fedor, a loss in Affliction: Banned last July.

His size will def help but against a true boxer I am not sure how well he will fair.

Tim is going to get absolutely murdered. He has the handspeed and head movement of a paraplegic.

I’m sorry, I look at this and all I think is “Ray Mercer, isn’t that the guy that Kimbo tapped with a guillotine?” I know about his boxing career, but that’s all I can think about.

    Tim Sylvia by submission!

In all seriousness, if they stay standing it’ll be a fun fight. I don’t know how good Ray is with his kicks and knees, and if he’s not good in the clinch, he’s gonna get hurt by big Timmy. If he is good, then Tim’s in trouble, cuz he is not going to bob-and-weave around Ray Mercer.

Joshua it is a BOXING match.

Thanks for that, Billy Bob. Sorry I missed that.

You’re right, then. Tim is SOL.

If Mercer was really dedicated he could have been great.
He looked horrible against Lennox Lewis and still came out on top even though he lost via split decision. He was more or less long forgotten when he stepped in the ring against Lewis.

But if he’s still fighting at 47 . . . guess Mercer didn’t manage his money well OR he really, really, really loves to compete.

Sylvia? Boxing?? Sylvia stays in the pocket with little to no head movement waiting to knocked off. Then again the same can be said for Big Nogueira lately.

I thought this story was a joke when it broke. Obviously Mercer will be favored. Timmy is no Lennox Lewis. Tim was on the date TV show, Lennox was on The Apprentice..lol

This could be a huge laughing stock if Tim can not hold his own.

My feelings on this are that Tim needs to fire Monte Cox and get someone else to manage what’s left of his career.

  9. VEe says:
    February 26, 2009 at 12:24 pm

I understand Tim in trying to make money and continue fighting but after the HUGE pay-day for the 36-seconds of work, not forgetting the promotional responsibilities and training . . . you would think that $800,000 was a good look.

First I heard Sylvia vs Shamrock and now this? Was he banned from Affliction or something? (Pun intended)

Don’t know if this is even legal but AfflictionMMA.com has posted ALL of Fedor’s fights. http://affliction-mma.com/?p=421

Would you fire someone that got you the payday from fighting Fedor?

  11. Ryan Bartlett says:
    February 26, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Unless he wants to embrace the farce that his career has became…..yes.

  12. Bryan Levick says:
    February 26, 2009 at 1:38 pm

He is not going to fire Monte Cox who is the premier agent in MMA right now. Regardless of how awful this fight looks right now, Sylvia will survive and either fight in Affliction or go to Japan where they would embrace him for thr freak show he is. No matter what he will still find some decent paydays ahead. Why would he fire a guy who got him $800k for a half minute’s work?

  13. curtis says:
    February 26, 2009 at 2:19 pm

If you were T.O. would you fire Drew Rosenhouse? Even though his career is becoming a laughing stock?

  14. Bryan Levick says:

Good point Curtis, it’s called not biting the hand that feeds you.
