Breakdown UFC 93: Rousimar Palhares vs. Jeremy Horn

By Curtis Clontz on Jan 13, 2009

Round 2 of the Breakdown UFC 93 brings us to the Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares. This is going to be a decent fight that could provide us with a big finish, but won’t be one of the major draws of the
card. That being said, I don’t know how many times that combination results in a heck of a fight. This one could provide some unexpected excitement to the 93 fight card.

Jeremy Horn has been called everything in his MMA career. The most notable is legend. Not like Will Smith, I am talking for real legend. Horn has more fights than the average pro fighter combined. His 80-18-5 record is incredible. That is over 100 professional MMA fights (like I said…legend). It is almost a guarantee that experience will be on his side no matter who he fights. Recently the experience hasn’t been able to help and he has dropped 3 out of his last 4 (all by submission). Many skeptics think it is time for him to hang it up, and a loss to Palhares could be the icing on the cake for this MMA forefather. Horn hopefully found his missing submission defense and will be ready for a war. The man that won 15 straight fights at one time still has the tools to finish a fight, and if he executes a tough game plan he will be hard to beat.

Rousimar Palhares has fought only a fraction of the fights of the man opposite him in this fight. This former Brazilian farm hand had a very interesting fight with Dan Henderson his last time out. Henderson
seemed to have an amazing respect for the ground game of Palhares and did everything in his power to keep the fight standing. In the end Hendo squeezed out the win, and Rousimar couldn’t do anything about it. Palhares says that he has learned from the loss and vows to come out a better fighter. A win over Horn would help him if he is serious about a run for the title.

In terms of a prediction for this fight, I am not completely sold on either side. I would love to say that Jeremy Horn is going to come out and dominate this fight for a quick win, but my crystal ball says
otherwise. However I do feel that Horn will determine the flow of the fight. If he feels his jits is better then he has the wrestling to take it to the ground. He has also seen the Hendo fight and knows how to keep it standing. I think that is the smartest for Horn. He knows that his standup skills are better than Rousimar’s so he should use his wrestling to avoid the takedown. If he does that I think he will win by decision. If this fight goes to the ground like most do, then the submission skills of Palhares will surprise Horn and could lead him to victory. Boxing is all standup, MMA goes to the ground. Therefore I am predicting Palhares by submission.
