Breakdown UFC 93: Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle
By Curtis Clontz on Jan 05, 2009
January 17th is another night of UFC action and superstars that have fought all across the world will be on showcase. The athletes will make the trip across the ocean soon and get ready to fight as UFC 93 will take place in Ireland at the O2 Arena. For the great UFC 92 fight card MMAOpinion started a Breakdown series in which the fights on the main card were broke down and previewed. It had a positive showing so here we go for UFC 93 Franklin vs. Henderson.
To start out we will take a look at the bottom of the televised fight card and that will be a fight between Marcus Davis and Chris Lytle. Marcus Davis seems to have become a fan favorite overnight as the old school boxer turned MMA fighter always puts on a show. The Irish Hand Grenade seems to be a part of the UFC East as he has been a staple in the UFC fights outside of the States. However last time in London he was the result of a loss at the hands off Mike Swick. That decision loss was just his 2nd loss in the UFC and first since losing to Melvin Guillard at the TUF 2 Finale (3 years ago). It will be no surprise to anyone if he tries to keep this fight standing. He has some of the best boxing skills in the organization and can put anyone to sleep with just one punch. That very well could be the difference in this fight, and this once could end early.
Chris Lytle is another exciting fighter and Davis would be a huge notch in his win belt if he could get the W. The 34 year old is known for striking and submission skills but has had a problem finishing fights at times. He has lost 8 times in the cage and 7 of those were by decision. This could be a testament to his strong chin. Since fighting in the UFC he has fought some of the best guys in the division. He has fought Josh Koscheck, Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, and Joe Riggs but lost to all of them. At this point Lytle is a bottom tier gatekeeper. He beats the guys he is supposed to, but has not been able to put together a top notch win as the underdog. A win over Davis could help him make a step in the right direction in this sport.
The winner of this fight could be the benefactor of the KO of the Night reward. Marcus Davis will be looking to end this fight like so many of his others. His hands are nasty and should be the difference in the fight. His boxing is the best pure boxing skills in the division without a doubt, but this is MMA and not boxing. Lytle could provide a challenge and has the potential to make this a fight, but I for one don’t see it going that way. Lytle doesn’t beat the guys he isn’t supposed to beat and I don’t see him winning this one. He is getting old in sports years and the light he is seeing could be the one of retirement not a title run. I am taking Davis with a 1st round KO or TKO.

I agree that the cards seem to fall in place for Marcus Davis in this matchup. Davis is also an extremely underrated grappler and has a pretty strong guard. If you remember back to the Swick fight, though Swick took dominant position most of the fight, he couldn’t pass Davis’s guard. I think Davis will be able to handle himself wherever the fight goes, but I’ll also bank on this being a KO or TKO win.
