C.B. Dollaway Does it Again

By Brandt DeLorenzo on Dec 29, 2008

Remember all of the controversy surrounding C.B. Dollaway’s tapout during his fight with Amir Sadollah? The former Arizona State wrestler denied that he tapped out while he was caught in an armbar, but the cameras and the referee said otherwise. Well, the Ultimate Fighter 8 runner-up has done it again against Mike Massenzio at UFC 92. This time he got away with it and pulled off a TKO win later in the fight.

This picture doesn’t really show much so the animated gif is after the jump! You won’t miss Dollaway tap twice and continue to fight his way out of the guillotine just a few seconds into the clip.

I’m not entirely convinced on this one. Yeah, it looks a bit like a tap, but if he wanted out he’d be tapping a bit more than that. It almost looks like he was thinking of tapping and then reconsidered. The guillotine wasn’t really in – when I watched the fight right away it was clear he was going to get his head out.

I’m on the fence about it, but I don’t think it’s a definitive tap.

It could’ve been one of those fake taps to get Massenzio to loosen the choke. Since Massenzio has good BJJ, I don’t think he would fall for it. The sad thing Dollaway is probably going to make a habit of doing this, unfortunately.

had nothing to do with a tap, his hand had just come loose and it bounced a little.

    Not a tap.
    ^Graabein, I’ll second that.
Did you check out the post fight press conference when the reporter asked Dolloway about it? Jackson quickly defended him.

The Ref wasn’t in good position even if it was a tap. I for one do not think it was a tap.

Whatever. You guys all had money on Dollaway, haha. :)

I beleive under the rules, it should be a tap… weather he faked it or not and regardless of how many times he tapped..

Totally agree Brandt, I noticed the tap as well. It just doesn’t make sense for him to make that motion with his hand, there’s no escape that says “slap the side of your opponent’s body twice—and do it quickly”. I was especially annoyed because I picked Massenzio to win a first round submission. I can’t blame CB entirely though, I mean, Massenzio should have closed his guard completely to ensure that CB couldn’t pull out of the choke, and you should always play by the referee’s whistle. I hope the tape gets reviewed, although I highly doubt it will be. Glad someone had the balls to make an article about CB cheating again.

Give me a break, he tapped, it wasnt a little bounce. He had that guillotine pretty tight and CB got scared. You watch the fight youll see him dig it in just a bit more and CB pulls his hand out and taps… Its fu*n CB Dollaway, what more do you need, he taps when they hit the ten second warning clapper just cuz it spooked him!!

The rules are you have to tap three times anyway.
Which means even if he was about to tap, it still doesnt count because he changed his mind soon enough.

Besides, when a guy is really tapping, it’s obvious.

For all of you who think that Dolloway did not tap to Massenzio’s guillotine, watch Royce Gracie vs. Kimo Leopoldo from UFC 3. Kimo gets caught in an armlock and with his free hand flat on the mat simply raises 4 fingers once and Big John McCarthy immediately stopped it.
