UFC 92 Results and Commentary

By Brandt DeLorenzo on Dec 27, 2008

Rashad Evans defeated Forrest Griffin via strikes in R3
Frank Mir defeated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira via strikes in R2

Due to the two very quick stoppages, a ridiculous amount of undercard fights are being televised! More fights for the money.

Quinton Jackson defeated Wanderlei Silva via strikes in R1
Cheick Kongo defeated Mustafa Al-Turk via strikes in R1
Yushin Okami defeated Dean Lister via decision

Whaddya think about Frank Mir’s striking poise and accuracy. Super sweet uppercuts down the middle. Big Nog didn’t offer much in terms of lateral movement, head movement and he didn’t seem busy with his hands at all.
Frank Mir had an excellent game plan. He didn’t allow Nogueira to recover on his back.

At 32 – 9 and 31 – 5 it is safe to say that both Wanderlei and Nogeuira will soon exhaust their “fighter” mileage. Wanderlei is far from finished so I’m sure he will do what he needs to do to clean up his act. I guess all of Quinton’s excuses are now validated?? I don’t know. Nogueira needs to find a better strategy than absorbing punches to the head. It’s just not a great long-term strategy. Other than that he looked incredibly stiff and the perfect standing target.

I feel sorry for Okami, he deserves a big fight. The lackluster match wasn’t his fault.

Rashad Evans, LHW champion? Honestly, I don’t think I’ll get over the KO of Chuck Liddell. Don’t worry, I really think the title will change hands some time in 2009 and 2010*.

So who gets a shot at the LHW title next? Rampage? the winner of Machida-Silva? Who will Chuck face next? Will any future LHW champion be able to keep the belt past 2 title defenses?

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!!

I would love to see a Rampage vs Rashad Fight but I think Rampage will fight the winner of the Machida fight.

As for Chuck I see a rematch with Jardine.

The 205 class is stacked. Rashad seems to always find a way to win. Although I hate to say it and I am not an Evans fan he has skills that no one else has at the top of the 205 with the wrestling. Rashad poses probs with several contenders, but I feel that Page has the best chance to beat him now.

I wasn’t a Forrest Griffin fan but he definitely won me over after re-watching his fights against Ortiz and Jackson. I still think the Rua fight was a fluke, but he did persevere and pulled out a great last minute win.

Evans? I’m not sold yet. He definitely has an amazing career and highlights in a relatively short time but I don’t know. Hey, I think Matt Hamill will hammer and pound him out. There is a chance there Evans will continue to pull out victories and maybe shocking stoppages.

I would love to see Hamill get better competition but I don’t know how much they will give him. He did okay against Rich and would have done better if he would have tried to take him down.

Damn, did any of you guys see the gif of Okami’s bout against Lister? Okami really didn’t deserve that. Hopefully Joe Silva will match him up against some one who isn’t scared to engage and handle Okami’s strength.

Maybe Marquardt-Okami should be in order? Winner gets the champ? Sorry, I don’t see how Patrick Cote even factors as a contender until he beats a top-tier MW competitor.

I think he’s proven himself more than any other MW contender in the division. Dean Lister pulled a Kalib Starnes on Okami.

I didn’t see the fight, but I heard a lot about the commentating being extremely biased against Okami for no reason.
