UFC 92 Breakdown: Rashad Evans vs. Forrest Griffin
By Curtis Clontz on Dec 26, 2008
Christmas is over, all of the presents are unwrapped, and there is nothing else to do other than to look forward to the fights this Saturday. We only have 2 fights left to cover for MMAOpinion’s Breakdown UFC 92. Although the Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans will be played as the main event, and final bout of the night, I am saving the Wand Rampage fight for the end. This battle will be one of TUF superstars. Both of these fighters did their part and won the show in impressive style. This has fight of the night wrote all over it and could be an all out war.
Forrest Griffin is The Ultimate Fighter. His fight on the original finale with Stephan Bonnar helped put the UFC on the map for good. They had a larger viewing at the end of the fight than in the first. Many believe that bout was the best fight in UFC history. In one very short season of TUF he went from the ape lookalike with the crooked arm to UFC fighter with a contract. Throughout his career Forrest has proved that his heart is just as large or larger than anyone’s in the sport. Time and time again he has pressed through pain and punishment where others would have folded. If he is to win this fight, it may have to be that same testicular fortitude that propels him in the end. His training at Extreme Couture will provide him with the tools and the game plan to defeat Rashad, the question is will he be able to do it?
Rashad Evans was the wrestler that danced his way (much to the dismay of Matt Hughes) through the heavy weights on the 2nd season of The Ultimate Fighter. There is one thing about Rashad that you can’t say about many other fighters in his division including every other 205 pounder on this card and that is that he has never been defeated. His record is blemish free at 12-0-1. The lone draw was against MMA legend Tito Ortiz and many feel that he could have won that fight if it had been a 5 rounder instead of the typical non title 3. Evans will be the superior wrestler in this fight and he may be able to control where this fight is throughout the duration. This gives him an advantage and could lead him to victory; however Forrest proved in his last fight he has nasty leg kicks. If he chops at Evan’s tree trunks then he will not be able to shoot and could be in trouble.
This is going to be a very exciting fight and is very hard to call. Forrest is the champ in the best division in all of MMA, and Rashad wants that belt. He showed up to the pre-fight press conference dressed to impress. Instead of the typical Tapout shirt he was in a full suit. On Saturday he should be able to control the fight and be able to dress in UFC gold on the way out of the cage. Although it is extremely hard to pick against Forrest I am not sure he will able to win this fight. I truly feel that Rashad will be the victor. He may even be able to finish Forrest. It is only a few days a way and this fight could be one for the ages.

Forrest really impressed me for the first 2 rounds, but step one after you apply the guard is control the posture… If not then you welcome the rain of punches that will follow.
