Cornucopia O’ Injuries: Initial Media Injury Report From UFN16
By wookalarman on Dec 12, 2008
Ultimate Fight Night 16: “Fight For The Troops” showed us that the sport of MMA is quite capable of injuring the human body in a number of different ways. Some just plain sick-and-twisted and others completely expected given the circumstances. While we expected to see Josh Koscheck’s mindnumbing knockout of Yoshiyuki Yoshida end in some sort of medical situation, we could not foresee or recognize other injuries taking place.
It’s safe to say that no one expected to see the magnitude of an injury when we saw Corey Hill so gruesomely snap his Tibia with a kick which landed square on the flexed shin area of Dale Harrt. Harrt used a textbook check to stiffle the kick from Hill. Anyone with a background in Kickboxing knows that being able to check kicks correctly is one of the best defensive weapons you can possess. In the majority of cases it just presents a certain degree of uncomfortability in the opponent and basically takes away their kicks. Trust me, if you’ve ever delivered a leg kick only to have it land on the flexed shin of an opponent, you’ll be apprehensive to use that same leg kick again.
Hill’s injury was the talk of the night and subsequently the buzz around the internet scene the next day. Anyone that has seen the animated GIFs out there or the video clips knows that the overall hype of the situation is quite valid. While clearly the most devastating injury of the night, it overshadowed any other medical impurities present amongst participants in other bouts.
The folks over at Bloody Elbow were kind and ambitious enough to compile a summary from an article initially posted on CBS Sports. The summary highlights the initial injury reports from the media present at the “Fight For The Troops” event. View the article from Bloody Elbow here.
