Antwain Britt Wins, Speer takes Loss

By Curtis Clontz on Nov 17, 2008

MMAOpinion was full of anticipation for the Antwain Britt and C.T. Turner fight that took place at the ODU Ted Constant Center in Norfolk Virginia. Trash talking and support for both fighters only added to the apprehension prior to the fight. The best comment made was the creation and definition of soul stealing to MMA by Mitch and the host of The Fight Zone. According to the host the definition is “Soul Stealing – v – The theft of someone’s inner being, during a contest of power, either by knockout or submission. The soul exits from the tear duct as the fallen opponent cries like a schoolgirl with a skinned knee. For more information, and a live demonstration, be at CageFest at The Ted, Sat. Nov. 15th, and watch Antwain Britt use CT Turner as his experiment.”

Obviously he was biased to Britt, but on Saturday night he did not fail to impress, but neither did C.T. The Hulk handled the pressure of fighting a future superstar very well. He made the rough 11 hour drive from Louisville and was ready to send a message to Britt and all of his hometown fans. Pumped with his new theme song from Faceplate, Britt came to the cage ready to fight. From the beginning bell to the end of the fight these two pushed the pace and came at one another. Once the fight started Turner landed a few solid shots, unfortunately one was square on the cup! Antwain took his time and regained his composure. Throughout the rest of the 1st round the two went back and forth with both fighters landing hard shots. It did appear that Turner received a broken nose. He kept spitting his mouth piece out as if he was having a hard time breathing. He did make Britt prove his chin as he landed a few solid shots!

In the second round Britt started to show that he wanted control of the fight. Half way through the round Turner was backed against the cage and eating shots, and took what appeared to be a belly shot that stunned Turner. To some it looked like the perfect shot to the stomach, and others appeared to be below the belt. I thought it was just below the belly button. I verified with one of the judges and onlookers that were ringside and they all said it was low, but not illegal. Turner was never able to recover from the shot which led to a stoppage of the fight and Britt’s hand raised.

This was a much better fight than most of the Norfolk fans expected. Turner was a game opponent and came to shock the local crowd, but in the end Britt was too much! If Britt is not in the UFC within the next year Joe Silva and the rest of the organization is missing out! He is a top level fighter that throws bombs and showed great take down defense during this fight. Antwain wasn’t the only big name on the fight card, and the Cagefest crew put together a solid night of MMA. Another one of the more impressive fighters on the night was Mackens Semerzier. His opponent was a Justin Hickey and this was sure to be a battle of two top wrestlers. Hickey showed up in what appeared to be a speedo and Mackens put it on him. Mackens could be the next MMA fighter to emerge from the local MMA scene! The biggest upset of the night came at the hands of Beau Baker who defeated for TUF fighter Tommy Speer. Speer seemed to be bigger and stronger but had problems with Baker. The only time Speer seemed to have the upper hand in the fight was in the last few seconds of the third round, but it was not enough to change the judges minds, resulting in a unanimous decision for Baker.

This Antwain Britt is stampeeding through people. I have seen CT fight and Grapple, Im a fan of his and thought he would upset Antwain. When I found out they were fighting I did research on him, theres no shortage of info on the guy, hes all over the web from TUF and other fights. He’s beat quality guys and I new it would be a good fight. It seemed as the fight went on Antwain just “grew” he gradually overpowered CT. I think the worse way for a fighter to lose is to not pick himself up and that’s what happened. Antwain punished him in the 2nd round. Im from Florida and there are alot of great fighters down here. I’m comvinced that Antwain might be the next big thing.
