Late to the building, we missed the two swing bouts. Sorry.
Andrew Riddles vs Mike Stewart (Middleweight)
Riddles is a Ricardo Almeida fighter. Stewart is out of team Jungle Gym. Round 1 was mostly Stewert using his superior size to get Riddle to the ground. He achieved this twice, but was largely nullified by Riddle. 10-9 Stewart.
Round 2 over before it could really get started. Riddle exploded at the opening moments, gained full mount and pounded Stewart. Stewart gave him his back and it ended with a rear naked choke for the tap. 50 seconds into round two winner by rear naked choke – Andrew Riddles. Riddle had a nice section of fans from home in red tee shirts here to cheer him on.
Chris Schlesinger vs Nissim Levy (Welterweight)
Schlesinger is out of Bellemore Kickboxing/SOCA. Nissim is from Tiger Schulmann MMA.
Round 1: Nissim with the take down right away. Chris S. weathers the storm for a short amount of time but ends up on the bottom again. Up and down with these two. Nissim is physically controlling the fight and striking more from the clinch and the top. He has side control more than once. Chris S. with a big swings but no connection. He spent a lot of time in the butt scoot position trying up kicks. I’ll give first round to Levy 10-9.
Round 2: fireworks right off the bat. Both trade heavy. Chris Schlesinger nails Levy with a shot that jars the mouthpiece lose and floors Nissim Levy. Finish is Schlesinger by front guillotine choke. That was a shock after the first round.
Greg Soto vs Doug Gordon (Welterweight)
Soto is out of Kurt Pellegrino’s camp. Gordon hails from Team Rush/Elite BJJ.
Round 1: Soto is the local babyface and the crowd pops for him during the intros. Clinches and dirty boxing early. Soto is a little bit bigger and lands on Gordon in guard. Body shots from the top. Gordon looks comfortable on the bottom but does eat some shots as time goes on. They’re up and Soto puts Gordon right back down with a slam. Mostly ground and pound throughout the round. Big Soto chant near the end of the round. 10-9 Soto.
Round 2: Clinch and knees by both to start. Gordon was winning the boxing standing and ended up on top after a Soto take down attempt was stuffed. Soto is working well from the bottom, but Gordon postures up. They stand up again but Gordon works a guill. Choke on two occasions as they go to the ground. Decent standing exchange in there too. Very close round. I’d guess 10-9 Gordon if I had to choose.
Round 3: Soto with an early takedown and in Gordon’s guard. Gordon looks very tired and for a moment gives up side control. Soto is winning from the top working the face and body with punches in guard. Gordon is trying to kick him off but he can’t quite do it, so we continue in guard. Soto chants ring out in the crowd. Gordon with a short shoulder submission attempt. He goes again for an Omaplata. Nope. Gordon bucked him late , got on top, and got stuck in an arm bar attempt as the bell rang. Close fight, but I’ve got Soto in the third and deciding round.
All three judges had the fight 29-28 for Soto.
Constantinos Phillipou vs Brendan Barrett (Light Heavyweights)
Phillipou is trained by Matt Sera, and Sera is in his corner tonight. Barrett is from the Rhino Fight Team.
Round 1: Real big clinch and struggle both standing and on the ground. Barrett was momentarily on top twice before they came to rest in that position. Barrett is opened up by the left eye. Phillipou on top for a bit. No real advantages when they stand up and the fight is stopped for the cut above Barrett’s left eye. He’s pissed. It was bleeding badly but didn’t seem to impair his vision. Doctor stoppage at 3:21 of the first round and winner by TKO, Constantinos Phillipou.
John Howard vs Charlie Brenneman (ROC Welterweight Championship)
Howard fights for Wai-kru and Brenneman, is out of Cambria Martial Arts/PA Grappling.
Howard has some interesting rituals as he enters and moves around the ring. Brenneman has a old English writing tramp stamp that may say, “Game over”. I couldn’t tell. This is for the vacant title. Brenneman previously won the Beast of the East tournament. Quite of bit of the crowd is pro-Charlie B.
Round 1: Brenneman with an early takedown and in Howard’s guard. They stand and scramble, and Charlie B. gets a trip takedown. Nothing big landed but Howard has to butt scoot for defense more than once. Howard dropped him with a short left but Brennaman quickly recoved and had top position. If you take away the knockdown it was all Brenneman in an uneventful round. 10-9 Brenneman.
Round 2: Short scramble and Charlie eats a shot but gets inside. He ends up with a takedown again. They stand them up and Brenneman eats another shot to get a takedown. Not much on the ground. Charlie B nullifies Howard’s takedown attempts until a flurry by Howard. Brenneman has top position a lot this round but does little with it. More butt scooting for Howard, who does land a good leg kick in the last minute. Not exciting from Brenneman, but controlling. Close round I’d go 10-10, but probably will go 10-9 Brenneman if I hazard to guess.
Round 3: even clinch, but Brenneman ate a knee. Slam by Howard while in a guill. Attempt. Hoard in Charlie B.’s guard. Brenneman reverses. The exciting g work has been from Howard, but the controlling work has been from Brenneman. Triangle attempt from Howard fails. He did land some shots to Brenneman’s jaw moments before that. Howard with an arm bar as time expires. 10 more seconds and he would have had him. As it stands, Howard might have won that round, but lost the fight on points.
Judges score it 29-28 unanimous score for the new champ, John Howard. I was wrong and happy I was. The crowd was partisan and booed the decision.
Glen Sandull vs Ricardo Romero (ROC Light Heavyweight Championship)
Romero is out of Advanced Martial Arts and Sandull is AMA Fight Club. As a triva note, Jeff Blatnick is the referee.
Round 1: Open up boxing. Romero with a kick and a takedown stuff. He stuffs several more before they trade. Each guy tagged the other several times. Too close to call but exciting standing round.
Round 2: Romero works the jab a few times but Sandull floors him with a counter punch. A minute later Sandull catches him several times before taking him down. Romero comes back and floors Sandull but he kicked him in the head. He knew he screwed up the second it landed. Sandull is loopy. Great fight and a sad ending as Sandull goes out on a stretcher.
2:50 of round two the DQ winner is Glen Sundull.
Non-televised Fights
Adam Dellabianca vs Dancy Debrosse (135 lbs.)
Debrosse has most of the crowd with him passionately.
Round 1: Feverish pace as the brawl on the feet then on the ground. Debrosse is winning the exchange when he’s deducted 1 point for blows to the back of the head. Adam D. with a cut below the left eye. After the brief stoppage Debrosse pulled off a wicked standing guillotine choke and Adam Dellabianca tapped out for the Debrosse win. “Haiti” chants from the crowd.
Doug Anderson vs Tyler Venice (140 lbs)
Anderson sports a Mohawk and fights out of Rhino Fight Team. Venice has the crowd behind him and hails from RABJJ/Shore Academy.
Round 1: much of the fight was obscured from press row in the first 2-3 minutes, but it looked to be back and forth work on the ground. Looked as though Venice took the round.
Round 2: Venice with a huge slam early. He controls on the top for a while, but there isn’t much striking action; just the struggle. They stand at 2 minutes. Venice catches the knee and slams him again. Anderson tried to work the guillotine. Time runs out on both men. We go to the decision and I’ll guess Venice wins.
20-18 unanimous decision for Tyler Venice.
Fernando Beridino vs Jimmie Rivera (145 lbs)
Jimmie Rivera is out of Tiger Schulmann MMA. Fernando Beridino was a replacement fighter it would seem.
Round 1: Rivera is controlling the pace with strikes and pushing forward. Much of the round is standing. Rivera is on top of all the early takedowns. Rivera hit a spinning backfist in the last minute and mostly won the dirty boxing clinches too. I’ve got Rivera 10-9.
Round 2: Rivera with a big slam early. He gets kicked off from the ground. Rivera docked one point for a kick to the head on the ground. The pace has slowed a bit. Clinch against the cage with a lot of knees from Rivera in the clinch. I’ve got that 9-9 based on the point deduction. So my score is 19-18 Rivera.
20-18,20-18,20-17 scores, so there was no point deduction (clarification – it was a warning), and Jimmie Rivera wins.
John Salgado vs Leandro Hernandez (Welterweight)
Hernandez is another Ricardo Almeida fighter. Salgado is from Team Ross Zocchi. The Almeida fan club is hear tonight.
Round 1: They trade kicks and punches. Clinch has Hernandez with the advantage physically, but little damage done. Salgo is coming overtop well. Hernandez takes him to the ground. Salgado in the last minute took top position and struck well from there. Tough round to call. Maybe Salgado stole it.
Round 2: Salgado kicks the front leg several times before Hernandez challenges. They fight in a clinch before Salgado takes it to the ground. Small amount of work to the two minute mark. They work to their feet and then back down to the ground. Salgado controlled this round on the floor and maybe standing too.
20-18, 19-18, 19-18 Majority decision for John Salgado.
