Ex-Sherdog Editor Brad McCray Speaks via E-mail

By Brandt DeLorenzo on Jul 14, 2008

Well, our questions (from one side of the story) are answered. Here is what Brad McCray had to say about his recent firing as the editor of Sherdog.

From: “Brad McCray”
Subject: Re: What happened?
Thanks for the kind words XXXX.
Well, long story short: Sherdog came to me and lured me away from a job I had for 14 years. But Jeff Sherwood canned me after five weeks, because I was was “not a good fit.”Ostensibly, he is now the executive editor and he & Loretta Hunt are running the site.
Hunt was his first choice for the job anyway and it was her “opinions” that colored Sherwood’s mind.

In the end, I am unsure why I was hired, why they ruined my career or left me unemployed with a wife and kids. I hate to make it sound so pathetic, but even people still employed at Sherdog feel it was an underhanded way to handle things. Its not like I campaigned for the position. I was just doing my best to emulate Josh Gross. Haha.

Excelsior!
Brad McCray

Best wishes to Brad. I’ve always been disappointed in the quality of journalism that comes out of Sherdog, so I’m shocked that they fired one of the guys I considered a clever writer.

In the end, though, I suppose it just goes to show how completely and utterly stupid their business is run, and that if they weren’t so deeply engrained in the community, they would be little more than a splinter.

My personal grievances aside, I hope Brad does well, and I hope that he manages to put things back together after this clearly malicious display of douchebaggery.

I liked Brad’s agreeable manner, though he certainly wasn’t afraid to assert his opinion, much to his job’s demise. During his argument with TJ about P4P rankings, I tended to agree more with the principle of his side, though not with the result regarding BJ.

How does he have the time to smoke all that weed, talk to his friends about fantasy baseball (slowly, I might add), AND hire/fire this guy. A true hero of my, that chubby bunny Jeff Sherwood.

Thanks for sharing this, I was still wondering even after Jeff Sherwood addressed the issue this past monday on his radio show.

Unfortunately, this happens sometimes in business. It is usually very difficult for anyone to tell how plans will be carried out and how new people will fit into the corporate team. All those who are signing up for a new gig — read the contract — if they are courting you most likely they will bend over backwards, and having a clause that says “minimum 1 year employment” will prevent you from getting the axe, or at least make people think twice about doing something like that.

    “why they ruined my career…”

    ?

Leaving your previous position for a new one with a different company IS ALWAYS a risk. A risk that you are responsible for if things fall through or do not work out. Be a man, take it on the chin, and move on instead of being a little bitch.

Listen to the Jordan Breen interview on mma nation
    http://www.wjfk.com/pages/2583959.php –> MMA Nation 7-19-08 Seg 1 – Jordan Breen phoner

Summary of the interview: Mccray is a nice guy, but very incompetent. The reason Sherdog/Sherwood didn’t say anything was because McCray specifically asked them to remain quiet about it. Basically, McCray got what he deserved.

Props to Sherwood, because he did clear things up later in a podcast.

Paul and E are clearly morons…E that is total BS…If you knew Brad McCray you would realize how comical your post is about him. Paul…I bet you wear adult diapers.

I am related to brad, so obvisouly i have a bias opinion. A year later he has never cryed about this to his family. Sherwood blew it bigtime! Brad is easily the smartest dude I know, and to get fired after 5 weeks, there was obviously a plot to elimate the job. He still does work for national sports mags and newspapers. He has work in “muscle and fitness.’ He will be ok….Sherdog’s loss! Losers!
