Mike Swick’s Thoughts on UFC 85

By MMA Opinion on Jun 11, 2008

Mike Swick posted his on The Underground yesterday to give everyone his thoughts on the Marcus Davis fight at UFC 85:

Hey Guys,

Just thought I would post some post fight thoughts after UFC 85…

First I want to thank Marcus for the fight, he is a great person and fighter… The strategy going in was to stay on the outside and use kicks to throw off his boxing game. We also wanted to use knees and clinch work to frustrate him. If given the opportunity, I would take him down and work ground and pound or go for a submission. I think I stuck to the strategy for the most part but he threw me off with his takedowns, I didn’t expect him to shoot and clinch me at all. I think I actually only went for a couple takedowns the whole fight, I did however counter a couple of his…

Here’s more!

I didn’t mean to grab the fence in the 3rd, though I fully admit to it. Its just a reaction sometimes and you can’t help it. It was scary getting the point deducted and I knew I had to secure the round then or it could be a draw.

The last part of the fight was what we call at the gym “Swicking Out”… I actually was trying to get my punches through but he was doing a great job at blocking them so I got creative. I was actually at one point going to sit up and donky kong hammer fist them in but actually changed my mind and stuck to the less effective freestyle swimming technique. Amazingly it looked so much better in my head than how it turned out! You just have to know that in my head I was a ground n pounding machine with brutal power and perfect technique… I guess I am not quite the ninja I think I am sometimes…

England was amazing and it was great fighting there. The people are truly some of the nicest people I have ever met! As you probably heard in my post fight interview I stated that I got my head stuck in a subway… Well its true, I mean come on, can I make stuff like that up? The night before the fight I was crammed in a packed subway and my back was against the sliding door and it closed on my head. There was room between my back and the door but what I didn’t account for was the door actually curved at the top and came inward. Considering my eyes are not located on the top of my head, I couldn’t see that the top of my head was in harms way. Unlike an elevator door, London’s elite subway door squadron are much tougher and don’t put up with panzy’s who expect the door to stop if it hits something. They just shift into 2nd gear and grind whatevers in the door untill the pressure pushes it through. Overall, it rates pretty high on my “I can’t believe that just happened to me” scale. And this was just a touch of how my “day before the fight” went. You will have to get the UFC 85 DVD and watch the behind the scenes extras to hear about the amazingly long and draining day I had… Nothing like good ole memories!

I want to thank all the fans out there who have supported me through my tough last year. Its been hard with the Okami loss and with the lackluster win over Burkman. There are a lot of things that play factors in big fights that most people don’t realize and it takes gaining experience to be able to cope and handle certain situations. I feel I am growing as a fighter and am gaining more experience I need with every fight. I have been fortunate enough to generate a great fan base who is very supportive and I appreciate it more than you know.

I would like to thank my sponsors for this fight: OakGrove Technologies, CageFighter, Sprawl, Toe2Toe, PAIN Inc, SCORE Clinic, Giovanna Rims and TSM Studios.

I would also like to give a special shout out to the military. You guys are the real hero’s and I hope you all come home safe. I will continue with my support of visiting bases and hospitals and hopefully by going to Iraq soon…

Thanks,

-Mike Swick
