WEC: Faber vs. Pulver

By Curtis Clontz on May 28, 2008

This Sunday the WEC will be putting on one of their best fight cards, and hands down the most anticipated showdown between fighters ever in the history of the organization. Just a little more than a week later than another showdown of little guys in the UFC, the WEC’s two best 145 pounders will go toe to toe for supremacy. The WEC will look to show the world that they are not the minor leagues as they put their crown jewel Urijah Faber against UFC legend Jens Pulver. The ARCO arena in Sacramento California will be rocking as this stack card looks to provide pure excitement and non stop action.

Urijah Faber versus Jens Pulver

This is the fight that so many fans want to see. Everyone wants Faber to be tested and what better way to do it than with a fighter that has never lost at 145, a former champion, and legend in the sport. Jens “little evil” Pulver is a fighter that looks to solidify his place in history and put another belt around his waste. Pulver is known as the coach for season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter reality show, his good wrestling, and tough left hand. If his left hand lands flush, you may be done for the night. The WEC and California Kid Urijah Faber will look to also solidify his place in history. Faber is known for his great wrestling, his great conditioning, and his winning record. Faber only lost once in his career and is undefeated since joining the WEC. This looks to be a very exciting fight and could be one of the best fights of the year in the sport.

Yoshiro Maeda versus Miguel Angel Torres

If you thought the only excitement in the WEC was in the 145 division you are wrong. Maeda and Torres look to put on a show in the 135 pound weight class. Maeda is 22-4-2 and is coming off of a victory against WEC fighter Charlie Valencia. In that fight he recorded a first round victory by TKO, his strength is his standup and vast fighting experience. If you are Torres make sure you watch for those hands. Torres is more of an overall fighter with strengths in striking with his knees and submissions. Boasting an impressive 33-1 this Indiana native looks to dominate the fight and show just how exciting the little guys can be.

Chuck Grigsby versus Mark Munoz

Zuffa and the UFC have said time and time again that the WEC is not the minor leagues for the UFC. In he 205 pound weight division, everyone other than the UFC is the minor leagues. Grigsby and Munoz will look to put their stamp on the WEC’s light heavy weight division as they square off. Chuck Grigsby is a monster of a man standing at 6 foot 6 inches tall. Grigsby’s best strength is his striking. His length can cause problems for many opponents. The former investigator will look to keep the fight standing. Mark Munoz is a strong wrestler. Strong may not be the words that put his wrestling background where it should be. Munoz was the 2001 D-1 NCAA National Champion and 2x All American for Oklahoma State. Munoz will look to counter Grigsby’s height with solid takedowns and pressure.

Kenneth Alexander versus Rob McCullough

Both of these fighters will be looking to rebound after a loss in their last fight. Razor Rob McCullough is one guy that could fight in the UFC and do fairly well. This 155 pound stud has very heavy hands and world class striking. He is 15-3 and is from Huntington Beach California. Rob is looking to rebound from a Knock out against Jamie Varner in February. Alexander is a former Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corp and will look to bring in a strong mental state, chokes, and ground and pound to upset the heavy handed McCullough.

Many will tune into Versus on Sunday night at 9:00 PM to see the fight between Faber and Pulver. If they don’t know anything about the other fights then they will pleasantly be surprised. The 4 fights that will for sure be televised should provide the fans with the type of fights the fans want to see. We won’t kid ourselves, everyone that will be turning in will be watching for the Faber Pulver fight. It could be the WEC fight of they year, and will solidify someone’s place in history, as they face in the most anticipated bout in WEC history.
