Rome’s Reputation is Burning
By Brandt DeLorenzo on Oct 18, 2007
It’s not helping when he allows Jim Lampley, an ignorant HBO boxing commentator, to take over his show and call MMA fighters “bar fighters.” Nice job! Thanks to MMA Weekly, we now can flame yet another idiot who is trying to make the UFC, and MMA in general, look bad because boxing is going down the drain. Nothing against boxing – it’s just boring compared to MMA in my opinion.
As per a member on th MMA Weekly forums, Lampley apparently went on to say a few other things:
He said the UFC is just bar fighters who have no real athletic talent. They just gouge and bite. The do flying kicks and stomp on people’s chest.
He then went on to say that any UFC or K-1 fighter would get killed by a boxer in under two minutes cause they are just bar fighters with no athletic merit.
Ok Mr. Lampley, go watch UFC 77 this weekend and count those chest stomps for me. And while you’re off watching repeats of the latest Holyfield snorefest, do us all a favor and stop talking for five minutes so you can actually educate yourself. In the meantime, go find some boxers that could beat UFC MMA fighters and start up your own little organizations so we can all laugh at you some more.

Lampley has been doing this for years. Please don’t give him any more attention. Boxing vs MMA is really an irrelevant argument, and Lampley plays it not because he’s completely ignorant, but because he fears the market share loss of his sport, boxing, and has feared HBO getting into bed w/ MMA for years. Truthfully, boxing and MMA aren’t in competition, so Lampley should relax. Both put up huge PPV years financially in 2006. Boxing scours to the over 35 and Latino/Mexican populations, where MMA scours under 35 and prominently whiter audience.
Sadly, Lampley is one of the greatest boxing announcers of all time, and if he didn’t feel threatened, should have learned more about MMA years ago. There is no MMA lead or play by play announcer that is his equal or equivalent in MMA.
