The knee pad is designed less for post-injury healing and more for pre-injury prevention. When shooting at an opponent's legs and subsequently grappling on common dojo mats it can be easy to develop mat burns. The neoprene construction of these sleeves prevent that and are form fitting enough to stay in place even during active workouts.
The sleeves also contain a light amount of padding which helps soften impacts when going to the ground.
