Your arguments as to why Mixed Martial Arts are better than Boxing aren’t helping. In fairness to you, a Boxing fan’s slights against your sport don’t do them any favors either. I personally don’t get into NASCAR much, but mocking it to anyone that will listen won’t diminish the sports/brands accomplishments or popularity. More to the point, I’m not accomplishing anything by telling people my interest is better. It’s good that people like diverse entertainment forms. It gets dull focusing on one thing. Not to mention some people find inspiration, redemption, or happiness in things other than all our own collective narrow in scope interests. MMA and Boxing have little to do with one another, and both will exist on TV, the internet, and sports pages in some form for the duration of all our lives. The same goes for NASCAR too.
Speaking of NASCAR, that’s a brand name. So is UFC. They are brand names of a sport. In UFC’s case, that’s MMA. So when Dana White says the UFC will be bigger than the NFL or NASCAR, he’s saying my brand of MMA will (hopefully) be a bigger sports and entertainment commodity than football’s leading brand name, or car racing’s. By that, he’s actually saying my business will (hopefully) be more profitable annually than the business’ of the NFL or NASCAR. It’s unlikely, but that’s what the head of a corporation aims for.
I mention this because as much as online fans and pundits tend to take apart Dana White (and he very obviously obsesses over it), he’s doing what the owner of a business would do once they’ve effectively dominated the market share of their own sub-genre. When fans say they want MMA to “go mainstream”, or “grow bigger”, what does that mean. I ask because I’m unclear as to what is wrong with MMA now? Why do any of you online who obviously keep up and watch several different organizations at once while discussing all the finer points ad nausuem, need more? Is CBS enough? Does there need to be a channel? Does everyone have to like what you like? I’m not clear as to what the end game for MMA is from a online fan perspective. I realize there is no group think on this, but past network TV and perhaps consistent quality ESPN/newspaper coverage, what is there that you want? I’m not mocking you, I’m just hoping for a sense of perspective of what you already have. I think we all need some perspective, but I’m willing to listen. Comments can be left below.
