UFC 78 Round by Round Live Coverage

The televised show starts with Evans and Bisping trash talking. If you weren’t aware, Bisping angrily responded to a blog post by Evans last week and an internet war began.

The crowd looks excited, drunk, and from New Jersey.

Mike Goldberg started the show talking about the two TUF champions going up against each other for the first time.

As mentioned by me before, the UFC is starting things off with a lightweight fight. Good choice!

We won’t be seeing our typical UFC referee’s tonight either.

Michael Bisping vs. Rashad Evans

Round 1: The battle of the unbeaten begins with both fighters trading and Rashad moving into a quick takedown with Bisping up against the cage. Rashad is able to get Bisping down, but he stands back up after taking a few shots to the face. The crowd is shouting “U.S.A!” There is not action and the ref moves the fighters back to the center. Rashad is working for the takedown, but Bisping is able to defend. Evans with a big right hand that misses and Bisping goes for a high kick. Evans takes him down, stands up, and ends up with side control after falling back down on him. Bisping is able to spin out and stand up. Evans takes Bisping down again and works for mount. Bisping is able to force Evans back to guard and the round ends. 10-9 Evans.

Round 2: Bisping comes flying out of his corner with a kick. Evans is able to neutralize and slam Bisping after holding him well above his head. Evans is in guard and not doing enough as the ref separates the fighters and stands them up. Both fighters trading jabs with 2:50 left in the second round. Evans is able to catch Bisping, but he recovers. Bisping with a nice high kick, but nothing. Not much is happening, but both fighters are cautiously throwing back and forth. Bisping has Rashad in the clinch and throws a nice knee. Rashad has Bisping up against the octagon, but nothing. Evans lands another nice shot, but Bisping is fine. Bisping with a knee and goes for a takedown which ends the round. 10-9 Bisping.

Round 3: The final round begins with action from both fighters, but nothing looks like it hurts. Evans attempts the takedown, but Bisping is able to sprawl. Evans still able to take Bisping down and works from the top. Bisping is able to reverse and in his attempt to take Evans down, loses his position with 3:00 left in the fight. Not much happens for a minute and then Evans goes for a takedown, Bisping sprawls, but Evans answers with another takedown and gets flipped. Evans is trying for another takedown and Bisping is able to sprawl to avoid it. 28 seconds left and nothing big is happening as both fighters trade. Evans with a takedown and an attempt to get Bisping’s back. The round ends. It’s really hard to call because nothing did anything. 10-9 Evans. 29-28 Evans is my guess. The judges say Evans by split/majority decision.

Thiago Silva vs. Houston Alexander

Round 1: Alexander is agressive immediately. They clinch up against the cage and the ref pulls them apart. Alexander and Silva trade shots and circle the cage. Silva tries a high kick, Alexander grabs it, but Silva is free. They clinch and Alexander is able to take Silva down, but Silva is able to stand up and flip Alexander. Silva has half guard and moves to mount. Silva is landing some body shots and Alexander is trying to buck him off. Silva attempts a doublefist, but misses. The crowd is chanting “Houston.” Alexander took a few unanswered shots and the fight kept going. Silva landed a few more shots and knocked Alexander out. Silva wins by TKO.

Ryo Chonan vs. Karo Parisyan

Round 1: Chonan throws low leg kicks and Parisyan is able to take Chonan down. Parisyan has half guard, but is not doing much so far. Parisyan is looking to mount and Chonan able to defend and pull Parisyan back into his guard. The ref stands them up. 3:00 left. Chonan landing a combo and now Parisyan has him clinched up against the fence. Parisyan is able to take Chonan down and lands right into his guard. Parisyan backs up and Chonan is able to get up. Clinching up against the cage and then both fighters move into the center of the cage to trade punches. Chonan tries to kick again and Parisyan grabs the leg and Chonan falls easily. Chonan gets up after little action on the ground. Parisyan almost went for a Judo throw and the round ends. 10-9 Parisyan.

Round 2: Round 2 starts with both men trading i the center of the octagon. Parisyan tries to take Chonan down and fails. Back to the center as both men are cautious. Parisyan nearly falls over and catches another one of Chonan’s kicks. Parisyan has Chonan up against the cage. Nothing happens and they move back into the center of the cage. Parisyan catches yet another one of Chonan’s kicks and lands in his guard. Some action on the ground and Parisyan stands up with Chonan’s arm in a Kimura. Parisyan loses the Kimura, but looks to maintain control of Chonan’s arm. Chonan is able to free himself and falls back with Parisyan in his half guard. Only a little bit of action on the ground and the round ends with Parisyan on top. 10-9 Parisyan.

Round 3: Parisyan gets Chonan in the groin, but action quickly resumes. Parisyan looks to take Chonan down in the clinch up against the cage. Nothing happens and the ref separates the fighters. Both fighters trade a few punches and Parisyan trips Chonan and lands in half guard. Parisyan lands elbows and there is 3:00 remaining. Parisyan has mount and Chonan easily swept him. Both men counter on the ground and they are back on their feet. Chonan tries for a spinning backfist, but comes up short. Both men cautious again. Crowd is booing more. Parisyan with a spinning backfist but no damage. Parisyan has Chonan up against the cage and lands a nice elbow. More action up against the cage, but nothing happens. The round ends and the crowd is booing again. 10-9 Parisyan. 30-27.

Joe Doerksen vs. Ed Herman

Round 1: Herman is first and both men are swinging. Doerksen goes for the takedown, but Herman almost reverses and both men are standing again. Clinching up against the fence and Herman takes Doerksen down. Herman in half guard and looking to pass. Doerksen is trying to keep Herman close. Doerksen forces Herman up and both men trade knees up against the cage. The ref breaks up the idel fighters. Herman explodes and Doerksen takes a few shots. Herman sprawls with Doerksen trying to pull him down and Herman is standing above Doerksen, but Doerksen stands up. Both men go back down and Hermn has side control and quickly moves to mount. Doerksen tries to pull him close and pushes Herman back to guard. Doerksen tries a weak submission from the bottom. Herman pushes Doerksen up to the cage and tries to use his elbows. Doerksen’s left eye is taking a lot of abuse. The round ends with Herman on top. 10-9 Herman. The camera shows us Matt Serra in the crowd and everyone goes wild.

Round 2: Herman begins round 2 with a lot of punches and he ends up taking Doerksen down. He moves between guard and half guard. Herman tries to keep it moving, but the ref stands them up. Both men and trading and Herman’s takedown gets thwarted and Doerksen has his back with a single hook. Herman tries to shake him off, but ends up falling to the canvas. Doerksen pulls Herman back and looks to extend Herman for a rear naked choke. Herman reverse and takes Doerksen has a leglock. Herman is free and has Doerksen’s back and is landing unanswered blows to the side of Doerksen’s head. Herman throws knees into the side of Doerksen. Doerksen moves and Herman ends up in his guard. Herman makes a mistake and Doerksen has the armbar! The bell rings! 10-9 Herman.

Round 3: We see a slower beginning of round 3 but Herman lands a huge left and Doerksen is down. The ref ends it. Herman via TKO.

Frankie Edgar vs. Spencer Fisher

Round 1: The round starts off with both men looking and Edgar went for the takedown. Edgar moves in and tries to pass guard. Fisher gets out, but Edgar trips him quickly and they go back down again. A few punches are thrown by both and Fisher looks for a submission from the bottom. Spencer gets out and it looks like he takes a knee trying to get out. A high kick by Fisher has him back on the ground as he slips on the canvas. Edgar is back on top and lands a few shots while standing. Edgar passes guard and attempts to elbow the side of Fisher’s head. The round ends with Edgar on top. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 2: Round 2 begins with Fisher getting really close to Edgar and he gets taken down again. Edgar working to get side control and mount, but Fisher pulls him back in guard. Edgar has side control and looks to choke Fisher, but Fisher stands up and they are both on their feet. Fisher stuffs the first takedown attempt, but Edgar takes him down anyway. Edgar has side control and is looking for mount, but gets taken back to Fisher’s gaurd. Fisher doing a good job of not getting easily dominated, but he is not doing enough on the ground yet. Edgar working for side control again and tries to throw a few into the side of Fisher’s head. Fisher is now cut above his eye. There’s still a lot of movement on the ground, but neither fighter is really hurting the other yet. Fisher almost got up, but Edgar pulled him back down and landed in Fisher’s gaurd again. Edgar tries to get mount and ends up on Fisher’s back with one hook in. Edgar goes to mount Fisher and the round ends with Edgar in Fisher’s gaurd. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 3: We start the final round with a spinning kick by Fisher that does absolutely nothing and he gets taken down again. Edgar has side control quickly and is working hard for mount. Edgar has Fisher’s back with weak hooks and Fisher is fighting him off well. Both men are moving and they end up on their feet again. edgar and Fisher throw a few punches, but Edgar takes Fisher down again. Edgar has Fisher up against the cage and tries to give him a few shots to the face. Fisher stands up and Edgar looks to take him down again. Fisher gets free and tries to keep the fight off the ground, but Edgar gets Fisher down again as Fisher tries to use the fence to keep himself up. Fisher has done almost nothing so far. 1:40 left and Fisher needs a KO. Fisher tries for an armbar, but Edgar gets him back and Fisher tries to stand. Fisher on his back again as Edgar stands up and tries to land a few bombs. Edgar falls back on Fisher and has side control and is landing shots from the top as the round ends. 10-9 Edgar and 30-27. During his post fight interview, Edgar seems humble and even says he is a fan of Fisher’s. They found Rampage in the stands as he does a little dance for the camera’s. The UFC voters are saying Rashad Evans has Michael Bisping 58% to 42%.
