It’s a good day for BJ Penn.
The Hawaiian fighter who made easy work of his much-hated opponent, Jens Pulver, walked away with an estimated $100,000 from The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale match. Moments after the win, an embrace with Pulver, and a very well spoken post-fight speech by his opponent, Penn attempted to plug his website, www.bjpenn.com, to the sold-out crowd of the Pearl at the Palms and to the millions of televised viewers. What Penn didn’t know is that his site went down on Saturday thanks to the surge of web traffic and has just returned to the online world.
The total purse money reached nearly $300,000 with one-third of the profits going to the winner of the main event. This amount, of course, doesn’t include any bonuses for wins or knock-outs.
The UFC continued to pay the big names well even with the event appearing free of charge on Spike TV. Most of the big UFC events, typically shown in Pay Per View, have dished out big bucks for the main event. The under card, however, didn’t fare too poorly on Saturday as the Ultimate Fighter 5 lightweights were paid $16,000 for a win and $8,000 for a loss. Not bad at all and great some fighters like Andy Wang who only lasted just over a minute in the Octagon. Gray Maynard and Rob Emerson both received $8,000 each after their bout was ruled a No-Contest. Maynard, in an attempted to slam Emerson, knocked himself unconscious. Emerson was injured and immediately tapped as Maynard easily rolled away. Brandon Melendez lost 10% of his $8,000 after he failed to make weight against his opponent Joe Lauzon. Lauzon defeated Melendez to take home the larger purse.
Penn’s website at http://www.bjpenn.com can now be accessed for those who are interested in learning from “The Prodigy” himself. Videos featuring drills, fights, and lessons from the fighter-turned-trainer can be viewed free of charge. The website can also be accessed at http://www.mygymshow.com as well.
