It’s been almost a year since light-heavyweight fighter “The American Psycho” Stephan Bonnar lost to Rashad Evans via an Unanimous Decision from the judges. Only two months later he lost again to Forrest Griffin by a Majority Decision in a rematch gone wrong for Bonnar. Very wrong.
Months after the fight ended, traces of Boldenone, a steroid that is used to help facilitate the rehabilitation of injured horses, was found in Bonnar’s system. Bonnar admitted that he did indeed use the anabolic-type steroid before the fight after his camp intially neither confirmed nor denied the finding. The Nevada State Athletic Commission didn’t take his drug use lightly as they barred Bonnar from fighting for 9 months from the date of his fight.
The 9 months have passed and Stephan Bonnar looks more than ready to come back and avenge his two decision losses with a matchup against heavily-tattooed Mike Nickels, a promising Jiu-Jitsu fighter with a solid 5-1 MMA record. Nickels, with just six MMA fights under his belt, should provide for a difficult 15 minutes in the octagon against the returning “American Psycho”.
You can be sure that Bonnar will be doing everything he can to use his effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills and put an end the match up before the judges potentially enforce another decision against him. When his fights go to the ground, he is lethal, but it seems that lately he has been unable to get his opponents off their feet long enough to submit them. Will Nickels get twisted into a submission or will he keep Bonnar on his feet? The outcome may depend on whether the fight progresses on the mat or through standup fighting throughout the three rounds.
